    AMD ATHLON II install

I have an old HP desktop PC with an AMD ATHLON II x2 processor however did not actually come up with an upgrade notification. However I have borrowed a USB with the setup files already on it (because my internet is not optimal at the moment) .has anyone had any success installing on this processor. Can post all specs if needed but is Also 64 bit compatible. Just wanted to check before trying to install

    What's your exact CPU?

Microsoft confirms some older AMD processors do not support Windows 8.1

The link is for Windows 8.1, but the problem carries over to 10. Since 8.1 (not 8), MS has required support for the CMPXCHG16b instruction.

The QL60 CPU in my old (2008) laptop supported the upgrade. I had to do some fiddling about with drivers to completely support all the hardware, though.

    32 or 64?

From the comments on the link bobkn posted it would appear that 32bit (x86) installs will work but not 64?

Cheers For the replies so far. Its running windows 7 home 64 bit at the moment however has only 2 gb ram so would be installing the 32 bit version of 10 most likely. CPU is AMD Athlon II X2 215 / 2.7 GHz

As far as I can see from its spec sheet, the Athlon II X2 215 meets all the requirements for Windows 10, with the possible exception of CMPXCHG16b, which is only needed for X64. I'm not sure that it doesn't support CMPXCHG16b, but I haven't seen strong verification of that yet. As it was released in late 2009 (Wikipedia), I expect that it's OK.

    Go for it.

Windows 10 x86 requires NX, PAE, SSE2, and in addition, Windows 10 x64 needs CMPXCHG16 in the CPU instruction set -download the Microsoft Sysinternals Coreinfo utility here:

    Coreinfo

Run from an elevated command prompt (as Admin), Coreinfo will tell you if your processor has the necessary functions to run Windows 10 32 or 64 bit marked with an asterisk:

Athlon II processors should be fine with W10, I have used 235e, 240e, 250e twin core and 425 triple core Athlon II processors with no problems. Microsoft says that my old 939 Athlon X2 4800+ is unsuitable.
