    Upgrade from hdd to sdd

    Hello all,
I am impressed with my old dell Optiplex and I am thinking of upgrading to ssd drive
I would intend to use Anomei software as many of you have recommended
I have a 500gb hard drive at the moment, I ask, can I do a clone of my existing system to a 500gb ssd drive, or does it have to be smaller in size ?
    Also, can I use Sata 1, 2, or 3
    Thanks in advance

You can of course change partition size, bearing in mind the strict definition of a clone is an exact and precise copy. However it is often misused in the context of a PC to include cases where partition sizes change.

The only thing to watch is to ensure that you have at least 30GB free space on 'C:' as a realistic minimum.

I suggest you post a screenshot of your partitions using a 3rd party partition manager. One or more may be redundant.

As for the interface- depends what your PC supports, amongst other things.

I'd plug in the SSD to an available SATA port and clone to that via that interface. It'll go A LOT quicker.

In AOMEI Backupper, I believe there is an option to align the drive. Do check that. I don't think you need to use the option to copy sector by sector.

After you clone to the SSD and you disconnect the platter HDD and just use the SSD, go into Disk Management found in the Windows Control Panel and expand the remaining space...

How to Extend Volume with Disk Management in Windows?

Note: When you remove the PC cover BIOS may alert you that the cover was opened, and keep giving you the alert upon each boot. To clear that you'll have to go into BIOS. To enter BIOS, when the PC starts keep tapping the F2 key once a second... If you're a pro you can do it at the right time once...

As your Dell OptiPlex 9020 only has a 500G HDD and has no M.2 slot, I would buy a regular 2.5" SSD. The SSD drive must be the same size or bigger than the occupied HDD size. I would install a 1 T SSD drive.

As there are many SSDs drives on the market, we can recommend some for you.

yes you could, the used space is the important figure. I would use wincopy for this task which can also exclude junk from being copied to the new disk.

I have just spotted that ebuyer ( and the amazon outlet) has the corsair gen 3 nvme 480gb at an astonisingly low price. They are pretty good , not as efficient as the the sk hynix but better in many ways than the others with a massive endurance rating. I would pick the corsair over the samsung 970 and it is a no brainer at that price if the size is sufficient.

Probably they are clearing the stock at that size, the larger sizes are holding price because they are pretty good.

My Bro. just picked up a Crucial 2 TB P5 NVMe for $95 on Amazon. That same dive I had just seen a week ago for around $125 I think it was.
