Ghot - 'No remedying TECHNIQUE' I appreciate the suggestion of better SATA cables, but I would not class REPLACEMENT as a technique.

Megahertz - 'Does your MB support hot swap?' I have stated that the problem occurs only SOMETIMES, so obviously when the problem does NOT occur, the MB supports hot swap - and presumably that support does not come and go.

Simpilot - 'Slave drive... I haven't heard that word in years.' I hope the nostalgia is appreciated.
The batch file is indeed what I would call a TECHNIQUE - and seems promising. Thank you. Will try it and report back.

But the term meant something specific that is not the same as what you mean, Humpty Dumpty.

'that is not the same as what you mean' I beg to differ. According to Google "The slave setting sets a drive as secondary and allows for two devices to be attached to a single IDE/ATAPI connection." I can not even visualise how two drives can be connected to the same (IDE/ATAPI/SATA) port, but to two different SATA ports is a no-brainer. Maybe you can educate me .... although that gets away from the essence of the thread.

I have not been able to test the batch file yet, because drive detection is working perfectly at the moment.

I remember (vaguely) the 'slave drive setting' via jumpers - but that drive was still connected to a separate IDE terminal.

We don't have the problematic computer, you do so we can only give you some suggestions to try.
You came here for help but you seem to know the answers better than we do.

Some computers (like the one I have) you can configure a SATA port to be hot swap able so drives can be inserted and removed.
If your computer doesn't have SATA ports to be set as hot swap able, sometimes it can detect, sometimes it can't.

Isn't it AHCI that you are talking about ? That option has been chosen in BIOS - with the result that there is usually no problem. But SOMETIMES there is, and when it occurs again, I will try the batch file remedy you suggested. If it works, it is EXACTLY what I was looking for.

Just to let you know, the term is PATA. But many use the misnomer IDE. IDE is Integrated Drive Electronics and is available in SATA and PATA drives because now-a-days you no longer need a HDD controller card in the computer... Now you know.

In my experience, there were drives with numerous pins for signal - which I knew as IDE drives; and they got power through molex; then the connectors changed to the current ones I know as SATA; prior to IDE there was SCSI.

'Old 43 year old out.' is totally lost on me - could it be a generational gap? - I am 81.

Simpilot - Sad to report that the batch file does NOT achieve its aim - what a shame, because it would have been an ideal remedy, had it worked.
