usb ports don't work on windows 10, work fine on linux mint install

Before today I could access the computer using chrome remote desktop. Today that didn't work. Since keyboard and mouse dont work on the W10 Dell, how can I troubleshoot this issue?

Computer is a Dell XPS 8700, latest Windows 10 pro. Since I can't access the computer, I don't have more information about the system. I have Windows 10 installed on one drive, Linux Mint 21.1 on a second drive, on which keyboard and mouse work perfectly.

There is an exclamation point next to USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller in device manager. Tried uninstalling and rescanning, reinstalling, rebooting, but no fi, exclamation point still there.

When I was able to access the computer via Chrome Remote Desktop, I ran sfc.exe /scannow which found nothing wrong. Then ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth which didn't help. Also tried Driver Easy (I think it was), which updated a couple of things but no joy.

Windows 10 drive is bitlocker encrypted. Keyboard works to enter bitlocker password, but when windows boots to login screen, keyboard and mouse don't work.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Stan

Your PC seems to be from around 2013 or so.. is that correct?
If Win 10 is not supported there is absolutely no guarantee of being able to upgrade to Win10, or even that having done so successfully, that subsequent updates or upgrades will not cause problems.

Most users unfortunately do not post the driver download page.
    I found this for you:
    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...s-8700/drivers
    - where it appears a good number of drivers for Win 10 64 bit are available.

    Several are marked 'critical'.

    Are these up to date?

How are the keyboard and mouse connected?
Have you tried hard wired ones?

What happens if you boot to Safe Mode (e.g. via SHIFT left click Restart, or from Advanced Startup options)?
If you have difficulty doing that one of the options here should work for you:
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10

Thanks for your reply. 2013 sounds about right. Dell says xps8700 does support windows 10. My keyboard and mouse are hardwired. When Chrome Remote Desktop worked, I did check with Dell support and updated all drivers. So far nothing I've done has worked. Problem now is that I can't use the computer, since my mouse and keyboard don't work. Anything else is moot at this point. Until I find a way to be able to access the computer, there's nothing I can do.

As I suggested, you should be able to attempt to boot to Safe Mode using one of the options in the linked tutorial (click on 'advanced startup' text in the tutorial I cited under Option 1) - here it is for you
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

    Options 5 or 6
    - which do not require you to use a mouse or keyboard from Win 10 normally booted.

Perhaps you didn't read that far.

That doesn't solve your problem, of course, but if you could get that far you would at least have access to your PC and the Device Manager for example.

When possible review your Update History, including drivers.

I.e. what changed that may have led to this.

Another thing you can try is to use a System Restore point created before this occurred. If you have one, that is.
Again once in Advanced Startup options (see above) you will have the option to use that without having to boot normally.

Another option: the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging is endlessly recommended by members here. One option I would have is to restore an image of your Windows partition created before this occurred

Thanks again for taking the time to offer these suggestions. I'll try options 5 and 6 and let you know how it goes.

    I appreciate your patience.

When I restart computer, pressing F5 or F6 does nothing but take me to the screen to enter the required startup Bitlocker password. From there, the computer boots to my Windows logon screen. No amount of pressing F5 or F6 does anything.

FWIW, I can access my windows files from my Linux installation. (Have to enter my Bitlocker pw.) Not sure how that would help, but just an FYI.

So, next step is a clean Windows install. I'll try that as soon as I can and post a followup here.

Pressing F5 or F6 has nothing to do with using the power button 3x as per one option in the tutorial to force Windows to boot to advanced startup options. It seems you may not have read the tutorial correctly.

I also suggested booting from a Win 10 install medium (one of the options in the tutorial). Using a boot disk might require access to the BIOS/UEFI or to a boot menu triggered by hitting a certain key.

Note that many members here endlessly recommend the routine and regular use of 3rd party disk imaging. With such an image created before an insuperable problem, restoring the image of the O/S restores the O/S to as was when the image was created.

You are correct. I did not read thoroughly. I'll read the advanced startup section carefully and report back here when I can.

And I am guilty of not using third party disc imaging. I see that I need to be more conscientious so I can solve these inevitable computer ownership problems.

Using an install USB, was able to get Windows back to a restore point at a time before I thought I started having this USB port trouble. It did not, however, solve my problem. None of the USB ports work in Windows, BUT I am able to access the computer using Chrome Remote Desktop, which is huge.

Looking at Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus Controllers, I see that "USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller" has an exclamation point. Expanding that entry shows device status as this: Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware (Code 37). There's more to the message, but I suppose that's the important part. I tried uninstalling all the items under Universal Serial Bus controllers, then restarting the computer. That didn't change anything. Still have the error message.

FWIW, under the driver tab, I see this: Driver Provider Microsoft; Driver Date 5/8/23; Driver Version 10.0.19041.3031; Digital Signer Microsoft

Trying to "Update Driver" simply gives me a message that I have the best driver installed.

How can I replace the driver? Seems like an important thing to do.

Thanks for any thoughts anyone might have. (Or should I forget it and do a fresh install?)

Dell says all my drivers are up to date. Last thing I'll try is a clean install. If that doesn't work, I'll forget Windows and use Linux Mint, which is working perfectly for my needs.

If it matters, Windows 10 Pro version is 10.0.19045 Build 19045.

    Thanks for your help.

    SOLVED!
Downloaded FixWin app from Windows Club. Under Troubleshooters, chose Hardware and Devices. Ran this, was told Host Controller driver needed updating. Did so and all was well. I understand that this ran the Microsoft troubleshooter, not sure why I could never run it before, but I'm happy that it's working now.

Can you recommend a third-party system imagining app? The only name I know is Macrium.

    Thanks for all your help.

    Thanks for the solution feedback.
Please mark this thread as Solved.

I recommend Macrium Reflect or Aomei Backup
