    Need recommendation for new laptop


    First - should hardware questions (recommendations) be posted here. at "Performance & Maintenance", or elsewhere on this forum? If elsewhere tell me and I'll post there.

    I need to buy a new laptop and am moderately confused about specifications.. I don't care about brand - only specifications. I do a lot of photo and especially video editing. My preferences are in order of importance to me:
    • graphics card
    • display resolution (especially color faithfulness)
    • CPU (processing speed)
    • storage capacity
    • number of in/out ports

    Should add specs that affect photo or video editing? I know that video is very resource intensive and I don't want to have buyer's remorse when using my new laptop. I see a lot of attractively priced laptops but based on my limited knowledge of specs most seem to be lacking graphics and/or processing speed. I have several EHDs so internal storage is only moderately important.

    Note that the 'business' range of laptops like HP ProBook and Dell Latitude are claimed to be built to a higher standard have better support and are supplied with Windows 11 Pro for much the same price as the consumer range, which is why my last buy was a HP ProBook.
    Look for an IPS display but most laptops have a poor colour gamut range. Laptops with a better gamut are available but tend to be expensive. You will need a NVidia GPU or similar for video editing which gain adds to the price.

    Why do you need a laptop?

    I know that it's not what you asked but a laptop performance will never mach a same price desktop.

    But I do have some kudos.. It occurred to me that there are some essentials that I neglected to include. Notably:
    • Price - I need to stay below $2000 unless there's a great sale (at least 40% off)
    • Refurbished ?? - I'd like to go with new. Used means to me that a previous user found a hardware problem that I don't want to deal with.
    • Screen resolution and color rendition - Maybe I need to put this lower on my priority list.
    Thanks also to Zbook. I haven't looked at those URLs but I will.

    And why do I need a new laptop. My 5-year old Dell has a battery that won't charge. After 3 new batteries (only one OEM) I took it to a repair guru who couldn't fix the problem. I decided to live with it but am finding that the inability to work beyond an AC outlet too uncomfortable. And the computer is after all getting old.

    HP had included on site technical support.
    An additional consideration could be warranty duration, etc.

    Agrees with what I said in post 3! Business models generally come with Windows 11 Pro and 12 months on site support.
