I've found another USB device that doesn't work on my desktop but does on my laptop. It's a Sharper Image Literati ebook reader. It's running Kobo firmware.

Exact same issue as the Kobo N647. The internal storage shows as unallocated when it's supposed to be mounted as a drive in Explorer. Connected to my laptop, it mounts correctly.

It shows in the safely remove list as File-Backed Storage Gadget.

A device is not a programme.
How can you possibly not understand this? "The two programs are for writing disk images to USB connected storage devices but neither can see anything connected to USB." Read *every word*, don't skip any.

Your troubleshooting has not established whether the Desktop problem is Hardware,Software or a combination, given that three devices function normally in the laptop but not in the desktop.
When a device is fitted, what shows in ---Settings>Devices>USB ---and is it replicated in ---Control Panel>Devices & Printer ?
Have you tried uninstalling Kobo and Garmin, then running ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ---followed by ---sfc /scannow ---to repair any possible file corruption caused by your failed removal
Then only reinstalling Kobo io see if it is the cause and if not then install Garmin.
My reading of your posts may be problematical,it is based on your presentation.

Post #3, where I said I booted into an old backup system on the desktop. Same hardware but with that quite old copy of the same OS the problem doesn't exist.

Same problem *every time* on tech forums where people do not read *everything*. When I provide help to people I read 100% of the entire forum thread to see if there's anything I can add that's different.

DISM completed successfully. sfc said it fixed some things. Here's the log file. It's too large for pastebin or any similar site I could find. SFC-log.txt - AnonFiles

Edit: Reboot and nothing changed. Still not showing the internal storage as it should.

Report all of the 3rd-party drivers, by running this command as Administrator:
    Code:
    powershell "Get-WindowsDriver -Online | Sort-Object ClassName,ProviderName | Format-Table @{l='Provider';e={$_.ProviderName}},@{l='Class';e={$_.ClassName}},@{l='Filename';e={(($_.OriginalFileName) -split '\\')[-1]}},Version,@{l='Date';e={($_.Date).ToString('yyyy-mm-dd')}}"

Compare the list between the two PC's/images, and see if the working example has drivers the other doesn't.

You may need .ToString('yyyy-MM-dd') [ Capital MM ] to get the Month to show instead of 00.

I keep typing it the proper way, but ISE keeps "auto-correcting" the line on me. It's done it like 6 times!

    VERY strange.

I just tested in ISE on mine and it allowed me to use Capitals. I can't think of why yours would be different !

I'm using the up/down arrow to scroll through history, and it randomly changes something in the text string when the previous line gets picked.

I have been investigating on the Net for you to try and find a similar case and solution, but without any success at present.

To help me improve my reading skills, would you highlight the relevant Post and paragraph which positively shows how you successfully determined the cause as being hardware or software related ?
