    More Samsung touchpad problems...

    Hi,

My grand daughter asked me to have a look at her Samsung laptop a couple of days ago. She said it was just taking ages to do anything and I thought that maybe a quick sweep with MalwareBytes would do the trick. After a clean up and catching up on MS updates it seemed ok. BUT then I realised the touchpad was not working properly... (I had wondered why she had a wireless mouse plugged in...)

I can move the mouse pointer around with the touchpad but clicking has no effect, neither do the two associated buttons. The touchpad can be locked using Function+F10 and this IS unlocked. I've gone to Settings -Touchpad just in case there was an option to disable the touchpad but the only adjustment there is 'sensitivity' - nothing else. The touch pad is enabled in BIOS.

I've had a look in Device Manager under Human interfaces Devices and there are 5 entries:-

    (1) HID-Compliant consumer control device
    (2) HID-Compliant device
    (3) HID-Compliant system controller
    (4) USB input device
    (5) USB input device

I get the impression Windows does not see the touchpad at all and yet the mouse pointer can be moved from the pad...

In desperation I've ran sfc which found some problems and remedied them. I've also ran checkdisk which showed nothing amiss.

I originally purchased this laptop at a local computer fair and had it for a while before I passed it on to my grand daughter. I've read somewhere that there are no W10 drivers for the Samsung touch pad (I think it's an Elan) but I don't remember there being a problem otherwise I wouldn't have parted with it.

I've read some mails about Samsung touchpads on here but nothing that's helped...

I know the laptop is ~10 years old but with 4 Gbs of RAM and a cheapo SSD it's been ok - 'till now...

The laptop in question is a Samsung S3510 running Windows 10 Home Edition 22H2 build 19045.2788. It originally had Windows 7 Home Edition installed.

    Hi, first verify the hardware.

A couple of ways- does the touchpad work fully e.g. if you
    - boot to BIOS
    - boot to Safe Mode
    - boot to Advanced Startup Options

    If the hardware works..

Try creating a new user account just for test purposes- you can delete it later; log into that account- does the TP work?

There are programs that can be used to disable features of mice and touchpads. Are there any such that might be responsible?

Naturally running old hardware and using an unsupported O/S carries risks, making you responsible for trying to sort them out.

It can be that some update- driver or other- has caused this. The checks above will help to start to determine that.

You should find more TP controls via e.g.
Win key + S (or the taskbar search box if you have that enabled
    - type
    mouse (or touchpad) 'Enter'
    and select an appropriate result

    - or via Control Panel, Mouse - and you should see touchpad options under 1 tab.

Hello dalchina - thanks for your reply.

    <<< boot to BIOS
    <<< boot to Safe Mode
-<<< boot to Advanced Startup Options

I tried the three suggestions you made. Nothing's different. Neither the touch pad nor the wireless mouse work in Bios (it's t he old fashioned legacy type...). As for the other two - Safe Mode & Advanced Startup Options - the wireless mouse works normally but the TP only moves the cursor, clicking doesn't work neither do the two buttons associated with the TP.

Is it looking like a hardware issue?

    Thanks again.

"Is it looking like a hardware issue?"

Yes, it's the micro switches under the buttons/button area of the touchpad.

You could try cleaning under that area with an air duster. Access to clean properly maybe difficult. May have had liquid spilt on it.

In the Device Manager the TouchPad would be under Mice and other pointing devices > expand. But that is working.

Dalchina - I was hoping you wouldn't agree with me but as you say it's looking like a hardware issue...

Helmut - Thanks also for your input - and confirmation...

I've opened up a few laptops over the years but recently I've become partially sighted so its more of a challenge. I may remove the keyboard and see if it gives access to the touch pad ribbon cable so I can confirm that's correctly in place. Failing that it there might be confirmation that there has been a liquid spill in that area. If so its obviously fairly local as none of the actual keyboard keys are affected...

Thanks again for your assistance, if I have further news I'll post here.
