I have just lost my second HDD (D drive) with no apparent warning. It does not show up in File Explorer. In Disk Management an unidentified disk (Disk 1) is listed, but is shown as not initialised. The two options shown as available for initialisation ( MBR and GPT) both return Incorrect Functio error mesages. I don't want to initialise the disk and lose all the files it contains. Any suggestions as to how to get it (or the data) back? Thanks

Please post a screenshot of it using a 3rd party partition manager - Minitool Partition Wizard.
Have you checked the disk- its SMART status?
Assuming you haven't. get a copy of Hard Disk Sentinel, full functional trial, run it and post a screenshot of its GUI showing the report on the disk. Green is good, red is...
Now considering your backup... you do have a backup, don't you?
If you have a 3rd party disk image of all partitions on the disk, you also have a full backup of course.
The routine and regular use of disk imaging is endlessly recommended by tenforums members. E.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid) _ large enough external storage for image files.
Your post suggests you don't have a backup. You do know hardware can fail, get stolen... disks can be infected with ransomware etc...
Can you post a screen shot from disk manager showing all details so we can see its likley its lost its parition
As already asked, please post a whole window Disk Manager image of your drives. Don't forget to expand the columns so we can read them. How to Post a Screenshot of Disk Management
If you have a MiniTool or AOMEI Partition use it instead or Windows disk manager.
Do you have backup... if not is it important data.. that meaning is it one of its kind or can you get hold of the data by downloads?
if not then you are in a tight spot.... and really need to do a disk clone sector by sector rescue mode before you even attempting testing different things.
I saw you wrote HDD but i ask anyway.. is it a HDD or an SSD?
and take it cool. do not rush.. listen to what several persons has to say and i know from my years on sevenforums that @jumanji is good.
I will not suggest anything until as the other asked about a printscreen and the question i just asked.
Do not rush and do NOT write anything to the disk at the moment. The data is getting harder to get if you write wrong things to the disk so to speak... so do not rush, take it cool.

I was expecting to see Raw or not even detected as unknown.
You did not answer.. does the HDD make any kind of noises?
1 When you power up the computer, can you feel the vibrations on the HDD when it spins up?
2 When the computer is off.. check the power connector to the harddrive(disconnect and connect).. and the same with SATA cable (disconnect and connect the cable both on the HDD and motherboard) or better replace the SATA cable if you have another one laying around or borrow from the DVD of you have that in your computer.
3 Does BIOS detect the drive?
4 Is the drive listed as active hot-swap in BIOS and listed as disconnected/disable
It feels as either the drive don't get recognized in bios do to hardware problem(1+2 above).. or the drive has lost its partition-table(but it should be displayed as raw then)
I will be boarding the flight to US only on 13th April early morning. Till then I am grounded on indian soil.. I still have problems viewing the monitor though I got the prescription glasses for near vision yesterday. It is good for the mobile phone but not so for viewing the monitor though I have a 22"monitor. So I wiil be slower than before on this thread,

Please furnish the following information point by point..
I presume you have a Dell desktop
1. Your faulty disk Disk 1: Is it an internal or external disk?
2. Manufacturer? Model No ? Capacity ?
3. Do you know whether it is a GPT disk or MBR disk?
4. Now your Disk 0 Drive E: : Is it an internal drive or external drive?
In an MBR disk if sector 0 - which holds the disk's unique ID (and also the partition table/s) gets corrupted, it will apart from defining it as " Unknown Not initialised " will nevertheless show its capacity. In your case the disk capacity is not shown. and that indicates that there is a serious problem with the disk. ( In a GPT disk if sector 0 - which is a Protective MBR - is corrupt, it will show as a RAW drive.)
The task now: If you have any version of MIniTool Partition Wizard higher than version 9.1, uninstall it.
Download and install MiniTool Partition Wizard 9.1 from MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition Download - All-in-One Free Disk Partition Manager Tool for Windows PC
Launch it. If it offers a new version say "No" . Take a screenshot of the first screen showing your faulty drive and post. (Make sure to take only the PW window and not the full screen in the background). Will be easy on my eyes.
