Memory Upgrade question  

Hello! So, I've been running 16gb for ages, my board supports up to 16gb per slot, 4 slots. I was thinking about upgrading to the max the board can support, 64gb. So I have been poking around, can't find a single 16gbx4 kit, just 16gbx2 32gb kits. Crucial's memory finder auto populated their shopping cart with 4 individual 16gb modules. Now days with modern systems (Mine is a Ryzen) how important is it to get a kit vs, say, 2 32gb kits and mixing, or 4 individual 16gb sticks? As I don't see any other way to do this without mixing or reducing my want from 64gb to 32gb. I really do need the memory upgrade. ATM Task Manager is reporting 75% memory utilized with Firefox eating 1.8gb, as I just reset it, usually it eats way more as it has a memory leak (common amongst browsers in my experience >.< ) . I have often seen people get away with mismatched memory modules and everything works just fine - although I would definitely not suggest that. However, if you order memory of the same type and timings, you should be fine. So, in this instance, you could simply purchase 2 of 32GB kits to give you 4 16GB DIMMs. That's about as close to a matched set as you can get.

I'm not at all trying to discourage you from populating 64GB in your system. Heck, I went with 128GB in my system . However, I don't want you to be misled. Just because you see 75% memory utilized, that may be completely meaningless. Depending upon what apps you are running, or what the system is doing, Windows can make use of additional memory even though it really needs nowhere near that amount.

Even for most memory hungry situations, 32GB is very often a considered a really well-equipped system. You would really need to be running something highly memory hungry to need 64GB.

Again, not at all trying to discourage you, just pointing out that 64GB can possibly be overkill that doesn't really buy you anything.

In my case, I run 128GB only so that I can create a large RAM Drive for a disk intensive application, so that additional RAM can give you that kind of flexibility.

Yeah, just throwing more memory at the problem. I have to close Firefox to play Minecraft. The modpack I am trying to play eats up to 8gb of memory and if I try to run both the CPU utilization goes though the roof, as does memory. I was seeing in the neighborhood of 96% memory and 80% cpu. I change the settings in the launcher from 4gb to 8gb the CPU usage goes down but it then runs out of memory until I free up more and as Firefox uses the most, it gets sacrificed. >.< Heaven forefend I should try to use a Resource pack or Shaders or something. >.<

Well, we'll see. I know Ryzen is picky when it comes to memory timings, from what I've seen on the tech channels. This whole setup is mostly pre-release purchased. If I remember right the MSI mommy board I got, got sent back, for some bizarro reason they decided the front panel USB 3 header needed to be at a right angle and my case's motherboard tray is slightly inset so the cable wouldn't clear. >.< Now, while the x370 board will support newer CPUs, up to Ryzen 3/5/7 5000 series (I think, I'll have to pull up the CPU support list) you won't get all the newer features from the x470 and x570 boards. That's really why I haven't, if I do I want to do it properly and get the matching board for the processor to fully unlock it.

Yes, but the processor will be restricted since my board don't support the newer features of that chip's generation. So to do it properly I'd need to get an x570 (or B550 I think?) mommy board too. Don't have the funding for about $500 layout for mommy board plus processor.
