Thanks for the suggestions, I will try them when I get home. Wouldn't be possible to use DISM online by booting to advanced startup command prompt?
yes you are getting the idea.
you can try some servicing from winpe.
I suggested it in my previous post

you could try offline ( i.e. from winpe ) Repair a Windows Image
If I understand correctly, your previous win10 was ok. Then after update usb ceased to function properly.

Therefore it is reasonable to assume something got damaged during the process of updating.

It follows that it is worth trying to repair your damaged installation using the instructions in the above link.

You can't do it from within your installation, therefore do it from cmd prompt in booted media.

The image you are trying to repair is your windows installation. It is offline while you are booted into winpe.

if the windows partition shows as E when booted into winpe

    for example

    dism /image:E: /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

PC is Asus ROG G20AJ (Intel 4th gen). USB works just fine in UEFI and when booting in advanced options in Windows 10 or on Win PE (Kyhi's)

Just did two things. First one, entered safe mode to check the build version as displayed on the top of the screen. It is Build 19041.vb_release.191206-1406 .
It appears to be an insider preview, despite the fact that I don't remember ever joining any insider program or installing a preview???

Second one, I tried to disable the hibernation from advanced startup command prompt. What I got is an error saying this cannot be performed during an upgrade.
how come the prompt is D:>

    is that your osletter ?

OP was under Kyri tools (Win PE) and probably Kyri used an insider version to build his tools.

No, the screenshot with the Windows version was taken when getting into safe Mode on my Windows installation.

The second one (where I tried to disable hibernation) was taken in advanced startup command prompt. In there the OS System appeared as D, I suppose because the C was assigned to WinRE (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I have not taken any screenshot when booting Kyhi's disk.

So it seems that you have an insider build. How-come?

No clue. Tbh I was under the impression that you would have to join some sort of insider program, right?

The only thing that comes to mind is that about 2 years ago I switched the license from home to Pro (had the opportunity to purchase it real cheap after the EU regulation that stated the companies had the right to sell their digital assets like licenses etc). Other then that I don't see any way this could have happened. Maybe the license had been used to join the insider program and when I switched to it from the old Home edition it automatically installed the insider version of 10Pro ? (no clue if this is possible, just guessing)

Open a CMD window as administrator and type:
sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR=X:\ /OFFWINDIR=X:\windows (replace X with Windows partition letter)

Just did it. It now displays "Beginning system scan. This process will take some time"

I'll post the result tomorrow morning if it takes hours.

In there the OS System appeared as D
in winre the default is X, for installed os is usually C ( but not necessarily )

unless your installed osletter is D there is something odd going on.

The second one (where I tried to disable hibernation) was taken in advanced startup command prompt. In there the OS System appeared as D
I dont know what that is. I dont have that option

You mean in advanced startup (WinRE) you don't have the option to log in and open a command prompt?

I can boot to winre with f10 then f1 and the command prompt there opens with X: as expected.

    or

I can boot to safe mode with cmd prompt with f6.
