There are a couple of basic servicing tasks that need to be done first:

    1. Use fresh stocks of writable DVDs, they do deteriorate over the years.

    2. Clean the drive optics, easy on a Laptop DVD drive as this comes out on the tray.

I use a torch/flashlight and magnifying glass to see if optics are clean. The mechanism is very delicate so be very careful with cleaning.

The cleaning on Laptop type drives needs to be about yearly.

These are the basics, consumers can understand the reasons why, and are deduced from decades of Optical Disc use.

When these have been met then move on to other things.

    Hello @HDL,

Further to the above, it is quite an easy thing to do and test the DVD drive.

     Linux Live USB / DVD:

    Basically . . .

[1] Download the Linux ISO - I always use Linux Mint although there are others available.
    [2] Create a Bootable USB/DVD [ media ] using Rufus for example => Rufus.
    [3] Boot the media.
    [4] Test the DVD drive.

    > Download Linux Mint 20 Ulyana

    I hope this helps.
I may give that a try after I have tried a few other things. But I'd have to do it on another machine since that machine can't access the drive to create a bootable CD. I do have an external DVD/CD drive I can hook up to that computer to create the bootable disk. Maybe I'll do it that way so if any machine gets messed up it would be the one that is already giving me a problem. Just so I understand what is supposed to happen; Is this supposed to boot to Linux bypassing Windows entirely. If so and it proves the drive is functioning, the purpose of this I believe, then I'd still be left trying to figure out how to get it to work for me as I need it, correct? Again, this is just to test the DVD/CD drive is functioning as it should, I believe.

Yes, your instructions make it easier, thank you.

    Well, I may or may not have more problems now after following this that i wanted to try before the Linux thing;
To remove and reinstall IDE/ATAPI driver, follow these steps:
    1. From Start, search for Device Manager. Open Device Manager from the search results, and select the View menu. Choose Show Hidden Devices.
    2. Expand IDE/ATAPI Controllers, and then:
o Select and right-click ATA Channel 0, and then click Uninstall
o Select and right-click ATA Channel 1, and then click Uninstall

o Select and right-click Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller, and then click Uninstall
o If there are additional entries, right-click them and then choose Uninstall
    3. Reboot the device.
After the computer restarts, the drivers will be automatically installed.

If your problem is not solved, try the next method.

I did the 2 things I made bold above and after a reboot, they did not return. I am not at all certain what it did. The machine still seems to function as it did before I uninstalled the 2 items. I don't know how or if I should try to get them back. I'm glad I stopped at only uninstalling the 2 items and not the remaining 2. Any thoughts?

I talked to ASUS looking to download a chipset driver file to try that. There is none for my old machine. He suggested updating the BIOS and linked me to a BIOS update for my model. I downloaded and unzipped the file. It contained a file called K50IJAS.218. That was all that was in the zip file. Anyone know how to apply this file to update the BIOS. I tried clicking it and right clicking it and found no way to may it open and update the BIOS. I have never updated the BIOS so maybe there is some trick to it.

Create a bootable USB drive rather than use a CD/DVD

Thank you for the reply and the suggestion about the computer specs. I have 3 computers still running Windows 10 so at any given point in time the questions may pertain to a computer that is not the one the specs are for. I could post the specs in the thread if that would help but I never thought I'd be working on this laptop.

The common way is to copy the bios file K50IJAS.218 onto a fat32 formatted usb stick.

then enter bios and use the bios update feature ( might be called something like EZ flash ) from which you can browse to the usb stick and select the bios file.

    then it updates the bios.

    is it this machine?

Thank you very much for that information. Yes that looks exactly like it and there are more specs there than I came up with.

Well with your help I did flash that BIOS file but it didn't help. I'm glad you mentioned "EZ flash" because that is what it was under in the BIOS. I only allowed it to flash that file because it said something like, "set up IDE" but the AMIBIOS version listed before I flashed it listed 218. I'm not sure but I think I flashed it with the same version it already had. I'm just going to have to live with the fact this drive isn't going to work any more. I think I have exhausted everything I can try. Thanks again for the steps you provided here.

Does this drive show up in device manage? Have you selected Show Hidden Devices?
