    Intermittent Boot Failure from SSD


    I'm getting intermittent boot failures. My system info is as follows:

    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-10900K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz
    Installed RAM 128 GB (128 GB usable)
    System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
    Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

    Edition Windows 10 Pro
    Version 21H2
    Installed on ‎3/‎26/‎2021
    OS build 19044.2486
    Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 120.2212.4190.0

    Disk Drives INTEL SSDPEKNW010T9 (Boot Drive)
    ST2000DM008-2FR102
    WDC WD2003FZEX-00SRLA0
    WDC WD20EZRZ-00Z5HB0

    The boot failure produces this message (taken on my iPhone)

    Initially, the error was very infrequent but recently it has become about every other time. As mentioned in an old thread here, pressing F1 takes you to SETUP and from there, F10 exits and allows the boot to continue successfully. On another site, I found a suggestion to swap the SATA connection but I don't have any more available.

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    which of those disks are gpt?

    Since you're booting from an M.2 NVME SSD, not from SATA, SATA connections should be irrelevant. However, on some motherboards, using all of the motherboard's SATA connections can interfere with M.2 connections. I don't know if that's the case with yours. You'll have to read the manual in detail to find out if that's the case.

    If you haven't already, I suggest reseating the SSD. Remove it from its M.2 slot and plug it back in again.

    Also, make sure the SSD's firmware is up to date. See Intel(R) SSD Firmware Update Tool

    Otherwise, it's time to consider replacing the SSD. Most are covered by a 5 year warranty. However, Intel no longer sells SSDs. That division was sold to SK hynix, which might complicate the RMA process.

    I do hope you've been making regular backups.

    All disks are GPT.

    Had to search around in the UEFI Bios Utility to find the answer to your 2nd question. The recovery policy is set to Local User Control.

    No idea what that means. I hope you are going to tell me.

    I have never changed anything inside the Bios other than playing with the settings for the LEDs (This thing lights up like a pinball machine.) I also tried to alter the boot sequence to start with the DVD drive but I wasn't successful and put everything back as it was. And that was shortly after I bought it in 2021.

    Advanced > Boot> Boot Configuration.

    We don't know which disk is causing the error.

    If it set to Local User Control, that means you choose to either skip repairing or repair on next boot.

    You can ask it to repair the header by changing Local User Control to auto. ( I think that is what auto means on Asus, I have never used it)

    Once you have successfully booted, you can change the previous [Boot Sector (MBR/GPT) Recovery Policy] setting back to Local User Control.

    Hopefully after it has been repaired it won't keep happening.

    If it does continue to happen after repair, then find out which disk is affected.

    I recently installed a M.2 NVME SSD in friend's laptop which would not boot until I disabled AHCI mode in the BIOS. Also try installing a new CMOS battery since a low voltage battery can cause boot issues.

    I get the message on my Asus M/B from time to time.... I think it's a problem with Asus bios settings but can't figure out which setting I changed to get rid of it.

    The continuing saga of the SATA error


    My thanks to everyone who made suggestions. Gleaning from all the posts, I have made the following list in no particular order.

    Suggestions To Fix Boot Error

    1. Re-seat SSD
    2. Ensure SSD Firmware is up-to-date with Intel SSD Firmware Update Tool.
    3. Contact SK Hynix RE warranty.
    4. Change Recovery Policy to Auto to see if it corrects error, then change it back to Local User Control.
    5. Consider replacing SSD.
    6. Add SATA hub and move 1 or more cables to it. (My idea; would eliminate the condition of all SATA ports being used.)
    7. Disable ACHI mode in BIOS.
    8. According to the AMI error message, I should check SATA mode setting in BIOS.


    My progress so far is as follows:
    1. I will definitely try re-seating the SSD.
    2. I have looked at the Intel tool and there are some warnings in the instructions that I will have to consider before using it.
    3. I have contacted SK Hynix and received a response saying that they do not honor Intel-issued warranties.
    4. After I re-seat the SSD, this will be the next thing I do.
    5. Replacing the SSD is the first thing I considered. Cloning an SSD requires an external housing for the new one which I do not have. I'll add this to the list of things to try but down at the bottom since it involves the cost of both the SSD and the external housing.
    6. A SATA hub is pretty cheap so I will consider this before replacing the SSD.
    7. I can look into this but need to understand what it is that I would be doing beforehand.
    8. What should I see in the BIOS SATA mode and what should I change it to? I'm open to suggestions.

    During the next boot to Windows please run the V2 log collector and post a share link into this thread using one drive, drop box, or google drive.
