My laptop's hard drive has quit. Is there any hope for it?

Hello, This morning the D: drive on my Dell Precision 6800 laptop failed to start up during a restart. The failed D: drive is a Seagate Laptop SSHD 1000GB Model: ST1000LM014 and I am wondering if there is anything I can do to get it going again. I removed it from the laptop and checked and cleaned the connection terminals which looked to be in excellent condition anyway but that did not help.

This laptop has an SSD C: drive that has the W10Pro OS installed in it. The laptop took longer to boot up than normal this morning but did boot up. The D: drive has all of the installed apps on it like my browser, email client, saved documents and everything else that I normally use. I got a popup window that stated that my desktop was not available and could not be found.

If the SSHD is fried, is there any way to recover the data on it? I have in all the time I have been a PC user never had a hard drive crash if you can believe that. The thing that gets me is that there was not even one warning sign of trouble or pending failure of the SSHD. Any help or suggestions will be appreciated..

Yes, I do have a backup of that drive. It looks like I may be doing some shopping for a replacement. It would be nice if all of the data on the drive could be restored on a new drive but that sounds expensive.

With computers and data the word expensive becomes important as to the needs of the owner. I had a client whose drive failed and had their company books on it. $150USD to diagnose by Ontrack and recovery accordingly, total cost $350 but client happy. That was a few years ago and things changed but again, how important is the data to the owner?

The last drive failure I had was on a MacBook Pro with OS X from Mid-2010, drive controller failed when it was trying to Upgrade to the new macOS just a few years ago. I put the drive in a USB case for portable data storage.

I have heard of people putting them in an air tight bag & placing them in a freezer over night & they worked long enough to get the data off them ! But i have never tried this, i just buy another hard drive because i back up once a week !
