No HP 8720 scanning from computer after Windows 10 22H2 update

Fixed! I re-ran the installation file, and selected the "Full Web pak," which was not the recommended option but turned out to be the right thing to do. Since that option did not mention it would utilize HP Smart I assumed that I would be giving up that interface, but at least Full Web pak mentioned that it would scan. Full Web pak asked me to accept three different information gathering processes. I declined all of them, but when I clicked to download I think HP downloaded all of them. (I watched the names of the processes go by as the installation files downloaded). Files flashed past for awhile and then this process ended with a large blank window. I finally closed the window, having no idea whether the process had finished and HP kept telling me not to abandon the installation every time I clicked to close, even though a lot of time had passed (much longer than it would take to install downloaded files) and I couldn't see anything happening. I did not expect to be able to use HP Smart, so I checked my desktop for a new icon similar to the one my husband has for his HP8710 (many fewer options than HP Smart, but one of them is Scan) but there was no such icon. So, having no other choice of how to interface with the printer, I clicked the HP Smart shortcut and clicked Scan. It works!
Thank you fireberd, for your comment. It encouraged me to keep going.
Along the journey of this process I could see that HP has done a lot of work to improve the installation of this printer. There was much clearer and fuller description of how to install via USB. HP Easy Start was very well-done. And yet I ran into one place where I was encouraged to select an option that didn't work, and which left me over my head in figuring out how to install a scan driver using either a very technical Microsoft document or to use one of the many offers of advertised assistance programs from websites I had never heard of. And then there was the blank window that didn't want to go away even though I guess the process was over.
I can't imagine what complicated code looks like these days.

Start here: HP Print and Scan Doctor says the system (the computer or the printer? Read on) need a repair to what it calls Windows (WIA) Scan. I searched that term on Google and found a Microsoft document "Install a WIA scanner driver with WSD." that is far over my head. Can someone tell me what to do?

To regain scanning, HP support main screen recommended I download the HP Smart App from the Windows store. I did that and clicked "Open." Still does not scan.
So, went to HP site again, found another screen (sorry, I did not save search history for this) downloaded and ran HPEasyStart 15_3_5.exe.
To HP's credit, they made it clear what to check if I wanted to connect via USB. They never did this when I had to reinstall several times before.
Got page "Choose Software Driver" Selected the recommended choice, HP Smart. because that is what had been working before and it made it very easy for me to chose print or scan, and showed ink levels. In doing this I did not select an option (sorry, I failed to snip this screen and get the exact wording) that said it would allow me to scan from the printer console, which I figured I could forego because I would rather scan from the computer.
Stuff ran for a long time and I was sent back to HP Smart. Clicked scan. It does not find a scanner.
What now?
Thank you!
