CyberPower UPS Battery+Surge Outlets Suddenly Not Working?

I have this Cyberpower 1500 VA UPS that I bought few years ago. I rarely ever used it but usually had it plugged into the wall outlet but did not turn it on. I was using a surge protector to connect my laptop, monitors and everything else etc.

Recently I connected everything to this UPS. The issue however is I notice the battery is very bad because the moment I unplug the UPS from the wall outlet, the minutes drain very fast so basically within 2 minutes or so, the UPS would shut down. Thus the battery is several years old and would need replacement is what I hear is the issue right? Now I didn't buy a new replacement battery because I was told you could use it as a surge protector. There are 12 outlets. 6 on the left is battery+surge and 6 on the right is surge. Just recently overnight, I notice my modem/router had no power. I then unplugged it from UPS and plugged it back in and still no power. I then plugged it to a surge protector and it worked and noticed none of the 6 battery+surge outlets on the UPS work. The 6 surge outlets on the right side of the UPS however does seem to work.


Can someone tell me the reason for this? Is it because my ups battery now is basically done as oppose to very low? Did my ups battery malfunction overnight? The thing is on the back of the UPS, I see the word Wiring Fault next to this red circle. It looks like that red circle looks red so does that have anything to do with it? I have the UPS on the floor and sometimes I do bump into it sometimes but could it be loose or anyone have a clue what is the cause of it? The thing is if there is an issue, why is it the other 6 surge outlets on the right seem to work?


Do I need to buy a replacement battery for the UPS to fix this? I am using it as a surge protector but now because of this I don't have enough outlets. Someone mention it could be a blown fuse? If so, how would I find out if that is the reason? So that doesn't affect the other 6 surge outlets on the right? Again this happened overnight when I noticed my modem/router wouldn't power on in any of those outlets. Now I don't want to buy a new UPS battery for it only to find out that it might not be a battery issue? I did read on cyberpower website that if your battery is malfunction or issues, then the surge+battery outlets won't work? So the surge outlets do work?

You already answered your question. Buy a new UPS or a new battery for the current one that you have. Could also be a bad fuse, regardless you have diagnosed the problem, answered your owne question.

Most UPS's, including the CyberPowers, use sealed lead acid batteries. They typically last 3 to 4 years then you must replace them. You must remove the batteries and install new batteries. If you have a local UPS battery seller, you can take the old batteries and obtain new batteries. Do not throw the old batteries in the trash as they are an environmental hazard. Because these batteries weigh quite a lot, it's usually cheaper to obtain them locally rather than ordering online. If you are not mechanically inclined, I recommend you take your UPS to the UPS seller and ask them for help. It's fairly easy to do. REPLACE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I assume you kept your UPS instructions. If you did not, you can download the instructions here: CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD. Click "Downloads" and "User Manual." Even if you have the paper manual, I recommend you download all the PDF documents. You can also download the "Shutdown software supports most Windows systems: PowerPanel v2.4.6 for Windows."

I do not recommend you use your UPS with expired batteries as a surge suppressor. Disconnect your UPS and either get new batteries or give it away. A 1500VA UPS typically uses 2 batteries. Each battery costs between $30 to $40.

Is there a way to check if it is a bad fuse? Do you open the ups the same way whether to check that or to replace the ups battery? There is only 1 way to open the UPS right?


Also I notice the word Wiring Fault and the thing next to it is very red. So is that a big issue? I googled it and that means it has to do with the ups not being grounded or something? I do know for a fact that my building is very old and it isn't grounded for surge protection if that is the right term?

Are there risk here if you do the battery replacement wrong? So can't you watch a video on youtube on someone replacing the battery and you can just do that or you need to go to a computer repair shop and have them do it to be on the safe side?

CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD UPS's do NOT have a fuse. My CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD and my CyberPower CP1500AVRT's also do not have a fuse. They all have a circuit breaker on the back. The circuit breaker is the red button below the first 2 power receptacles which pops if there is an overload. If the red button has not popped, then there is no overload.

Yes, when the Wiring Fault red light comes on, it means you do not have a ground. You will have less or no surge protection if you do not have a ground. Read this article here and this article here.

There is only 1 way to open your CyberPower UPS and that's through the front. I gave you the link to download the instructions if you lost your paper. Use this link to download everything. Also, here is a YouTube video on how to replace the batteries on your CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD. The whole operation should only take you 15 minutes.

Yes, there is a risk you can hook up the battery terminals incorrectly, backwards. Make sure you take notes or pictures to be sure you hook up the new batteries correctly. REPLACE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Yes, CyberPower RB1290 for Mexico or CyberPower RB1290 for the USA is the correct battery to buy. You will need 2. Almost all 1500VA UPS's use 2 batteries. These batteries only last 3 to 4 years and you must replace them at this interval. For anyone in the USA, if you can buy these UPS batteries at your local dealer, I recommend you do so because of their shipment weight and to return the old batteries for recycling. REPLACE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Okay so there is no fuse. Is that good or bad? Now the circuit breaker on the back of the UPS that shows the wiring fault red light... the thing is I am not sure if it had a red light or not before the 6 battery+surge outlets still worked. Do you think I had that wiring fault red light on even previously or does it sound like it happened recently? I knew there was a red button in the back but never looked closely such as if it was really red or not as it is on right now.



When you say it does not have a ground.. so it always was like this? Again I have no idea if the circuit breaker red light was always this red until recently. Is it possible that the circuit breaker has that red light on because the ups is a bit loose or something? So you recommend me turn off my laptop and monitors. Disconnect everything from the UPS. Then unplug it from the wall outlet. Then plug it back to the same outlet or another outlet to see if that wiring fault red light is still on? I only have 2 outlets on the wall where I can connect it to. What I am curious about here is the do not have a ground. Does that most likely mean because my building is very old, then it always was like this and this ground issue is something that cannot be fixed? Almost all buildings here are like this where I am located.



The thing is it possible the battery went bad and doesn't even hold a charge anymore which caused the wiring fault red light or that is unrelated? Cyperpower website did mention if the battery+surge doesn't work but the surge outlets work... that is most likely a malfunctioning battery or battery that cannot hold a charge anymore? But earlier before this happened... my battery was just very low but now it holds no charge?



Also when you say I do not have a ground, buying a new ups or surge protector won't fix this right? How do I test if I have a ground or not if I use another surge protector or buy a new one?



If you hook up the battery terminals backwards, what happens? So this is something you recommend to bring to computer shop for them to do then?



Wow I need to buy 2 of the cyberpower batteries. This is going to be more expensive than I though. So ups that are 1000va or less use only 1 battery then?


Is there any issue using my UPS still the way it is but only using the 6 surge outlets that still work? I assume there is no issue with that? However, the wiring fault being red as well makes this not a good idea? So I can connect the UPS to another outlet. Or maybe bring it to a neighbor in the same building and connect it to their outlet and see if the wiring fault red is still there? Would that be good idea or it is a waste because it is the same building?




Is it possibly something malfunctioned or wires are tangled up which made the wiring fault red light on? Again... I am not sure if the wiring fault red light was always on before this. I don't believe it was but I am not sure.

I know this is an old post but I just had the same problem: unswitched surge suppressor outlets working but battery back up outlets not working. Battery was just replaced. In addition. Pushing the power switch button doesn’t turn it on. Solution that worked was a hard reset of the CyberPowerPC 1000 UPS: unplug UPS, disconnect battery, depress power button to drain any remaining electricity.
Then hooked up everything and now everything is back to normal. Hope this helps someone.
