A 3.5" disk spinning at 7200rpm has a tremendous gyroscopic effect. Any movement on the disk and kaput. Inside the case it's the best place for a HDD.
The disk can be left connected but then it is exposed to virus and mechanic failure.

Having held a spinning 7200 rpm HDD in my hand, the angular momentum was barely palpable. I'll just say I'm skeptical of your claim rather than getting contentious about it.

But OP can make up his own mind at this point.

@Word Man, what you proposed is an alternative and OP will decide what to do.

I can't imagine opening the computer case weekly to plug in a power cable to do a backup and then pull it off again. If I was going to do anything close to that, I would install a HDD power switch in the front panel.

Well, I do. It takes less than 20 sec to slide the side panel and attach the power cable. After backup, another 20 sec to reverse the operation. I'm doing it for more than a decade every Friday.

This 3.5" HDD removable caddy is a solution for removing the HDD without opening the case.

Those caddies are very useful. I wouldn't be without them.
