NVME SSD stuck in read only mode

    win version: windows 10 - 22h2

I have a Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD and it is stuck in read only mode. I've tried many things to fix it but nothing has worked so far.

    What happened?

day 1: Playing games like normal, no issues.
day 2: Playing a game but the game froze for a while and it crashed, bit weird but i restarted my PC and played it again and my monitors became black screen and my whole pc froze. i had to shutdown my PC via powerbutton. So I stopped playing and tried to figure out the issue.

I tried doing the "verify files" on the game but it wasn't working. I was kinda confused. I uninstalled the game but it's not uninstalling properly. I check the games directory and tried to delete the game folder but it wouldn't delete. This instantly told me it's in read only mode.

I checked if it was set to read only mode in properties (which it was) and i unticked the read only mode and it said
"the media is write protected" then my whole SSD is in read only mode.

I use Disc Management and it shows Read Only and im so confused i didnt do anything different.

What ive tried to do to fix the issue:
    1. i tried using DISKPART in the CMD to “attributes disk clear readonly"

    2. RegEdit: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies
the StorageDevicePolicies didnt exist so i had to manually add the folder and key

    3. sfc /scannow

    4. chkdsk a: /f
    5. chkdsk a: /f /r /x
using chkdsk did not work, it gave me an error "Windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected." so i went into safe mode and used the CMD from windows 10 troubleshoot mode and it let me use those commands on the affected SSD.
rebooted PC after the commands and it didnt work.

    6. took out my ssd from my PC and put it back in didnt work

    7. downloaded Samsung SSD Magician attempted to "update firmware" but it gives an error (cause read only)

i dont know what to do anymore, i still have access to the drive i can see all the contents on it, i can copy things out of it. i dont really want to lose the contents in it or format the thing.

is there anything else i can do? why did it even go into read only mode? i didnt really do anything different

I seems that your drive is defective. As SIW2 suggested, backup your data ASAP.
I think the Samsung 980 Pro NVME SSD has a 5 years warranty, if you still has the receipt of the purchase.

why would it become defective? nothing has really happened.

what would have happened to my PC if it happened on my C drive

Format erases all the partition. Don't do it without saving your data on an external drive.

It isn't rare to see a HDD or SSD fail. Why? Because they are complex, with millions of components. One of them die and the whole drive fails. That is why backups are extremely necessary and mandatory.
You're lucky that you're able to read your data. Backup your data ASAP.

If nothing ever became defective, then there would be no need for warranties.
