Touchpad device missing in Device Manageafter Windows 10 fresh install

Hello,

I just purchased a Gateway GWNC31514 laptop. I'm not a big fan of Windows 11, so I put a fresh copy of Windows 10 Pro on the system. After install, I had a number of unknown devices shown in Device Manager but I was able to download all of the available drivers and have the OS auto-select driver updates from my download folder. Throughout the Windows 10 install, fresh boot, and driver updates, I've been unable to use the touchpad (external USB mouse works fine). Looking in Device Manager, there are no touchpad devices listed. Also, there are no unknown devices (devices needing drivers). At this point, it looks like Windows 10 isn't detecting the Touchpad or Windows 10 used the wrong driver during the driver update process. Any ideas on how to identify the touchpad device given these to situations?

Thanks for the link. I watched the video; because I don't see the hardware in Device Manager, I can't update the driver. For testing, I created a Clonezilla image of my Windows 10 configuration and upgraded to Windows 11. Once Windows 11 booted, the touchpad worked right away. I've been comparing the touchpad configuration between Windows 10 and 11 (I've also created a Clonezilla image of my Windows 11 configuration so I can switch back and forth).

Looking at the following two pictures, you can clearly see where the touchpad connects to the hardware in Device Manager for Windows 11. In Windows 10, you can see the I2C but there's no sub-objects like there is in 11. The I2C driver is the exact same for both OS versions. I'm not sure what to do at this point...

Thanks for the link. When I first installed Windows 10, from scratch, there were a lot of unidentified hardware devices in Device Manager. I downloaded all of the drivers from Gateway's website, for my model, and pointed all of the driver Updates to that download directory. Since then, Microsoft has provided a few newer drivers through Windows Update and I used an Intel driver update tool to update two more. At no point has the touchpad worked in Windows 10 though.

I assume I'm using the same drivers in 11 as I was in 10 due to the fact that I performed the in-place update. Of course, there's a chance some of the drivers changed. I'm not sure what changed between Windows 10 and 11 in terms of hardware detection. Without a device to connect the driver to, no driver will work.

Safe mode in Windows 10 or Windows 11? I tested safe mode in Windows 10 and the touchpad still doesn't work.

I booted a copy of GParted, where the touchpad works. Here's some hardware info from Linux:

lshw command output:

There looks to be some good info here: Plug and play support for I2C. I'm looking it over now.

I completely forgot about Speccy! Nice reminder. I've posted my touchpad info below. It's cool being able to see the hardware device this way. I'm still not sure how to get Windows 10 to see it though. Thanks again for all your help : )

The suggestion to use Snappy Driver Installer ultimately fixed my issue. I used the tool to update all of my outdated drivers. After which, my touchpad started working. I re-imaged my laptop several more times to narrow down the precise fix. The exact fix required updating the Intel GPIO and I2C drivers with the latest version found here: Intel® Serial IO Driver for Windows® 10 64-bit and Windows 11* for the 11th Generation Intel® NUC Products. Although I chose not to use anything from the tool, the tool helped me trouble-shoot and resolve the issue. Thanks for all your help!
