I am going to upgrade a six-years old Dell laptop, with an SSD.
The laptop has HDD and my plan is to keep them both, the one (SSD) as OS disc (Win 10), and the other (HDD) as storage disc.
A caddy frame, in the optical drive, will be used.
Plan A
SSD inside the laptop/HDD in the caddy frame
Plan B
SSD in the caddy frame/HDD inside the laptop
With faster speeds in mind, which plan should I prefer?

Your question reads..
You want to put a SSD in your laptop as a primary but you are trying to work out if it is faster inside the laptop or externally?
Realistically no one would run their primary drive externally because its a liability.
Plan A - guarantees the faster interface, assuming there's a difference.

Replace the ODD with a HDD caddy and install a small SSD for Windows and programs and use the HDD on the caddy for data. That is what I did on mine.
Do a clean install and I recommend you move C:\Users from the SSD to the HDD (D:\Users)

There are two sizes of ODDs. 9.5mm and 12.7mm. Make sure you buy the correct one for your laptop.

You did not provide a description or a service tag number of your 6-year old Dell laptop.
Are you sure it supports only 1 internal storage drive?
I have two Dell 17.3" laptops, and they support 3 internal storage drives, along with a disc drive.
