Is Intel processor Bloomfield i7-950 still safe for desktop PC use?
Hi,
Just wondering how many here would have security/vulnerability concerns with a Core i7-950. It is in the list of processors that did Not receive the patch for Meltdown & Spectre.
The PC is running Windows 10 (version 21H2, OS build 19044.2075), all the software & drivers are up to date. Except for the Storage Controller, which is not current. In Windows 10 version 1803 Microsoft dropped support, which caused some latency issues. Installing an older AHCI/RAID driver from 2012 fixed that.
I see several tools (MS, Major Geeks, Gibson’s) to check for vulnerabilities or Speculative Execution Protection status on the system, may give that a shot.
Does not have a trusted platform module either.
Thanks

@dogpark
I wouldn't use either of your listed builds or an i7 950 for my main computer.
Main computer being the one you do things like banking on.
They would be fine for say a kids gaming computer, just surfing the web... etc.
For a computer that needs to be secure... it's time to upgrade.

Hi Ghot,
I forgot about system spec #2, that has been removed.
The i7 950 is a spare PC placed in the garage. I do share OneDrive files, nothing important.
So, my AMD Piledriver is too old as well. I see the price for ASUS MB trusted platform modules has come down to earth. Would installing a TPM change your mind regarding the AMD FX 8350 build?
Thanks

Just discovered the ASUS TPM-L R2.0 module only works on DDR4 motherboards anyway.
Well, it has been quite a while since I purchased a PC.
Going back to Intel for the next build, I like the new hybrid architecture. Guess the 13th gen comes out in about a month. See what that brings. Lower prices to the 12th gen maybe.
Thanks Ghot

You added more info while I was thinking, thanks for going the extra mile.
