    To me, it does. lol

EDIT: What I meant to say is, the slot can accept both types. So "B+M key" and "M key" are both supported, and, M.2 SATA SSDs use the fomer type of keying whereas NVMe SSDs use the latter type.

Here's another video that shows an M.2 SATA SSD getting removed from the Inspiron 5570.

    Denis - a few new questions -
    1. We are going to replace the coin cell battery and the manual said changing that would affect the bios. That should not be a problem, right? We just have to look at the bios and perhaps change the order, Don't know.
    2. if you look at pg 36 of the 5570 manual, it shows the M2 with a grey cover. Ours did not have a cover and in fact, the drive pops up when it is not being held down by the laptop cover, so don't know how it operated for 4 years in that state. So question is, can we tape it down and maybe it will work.
If bios still goes to it and it works, better still - we will have 2 hard drives. the WD and the M2. If it is still faulty, can't we just change the bios order of startup to go to the WD.
Hope all is well in London. Thanks again for all your help. Patrice

    Patrice,

1.1 When I had to take out then put back in the coincell battery, I found lots of unexpected Bios entries had changed. I was very glad that i had taken photos of every Bios screen to copy from.
1.2 I do not know why you think you need to chnage this battery.

2 I think that the Service manual must be wrong. As long as it was held in place by that screw then the drive would have been fine. Just use the screw again to fix the new one down and you'll stay fine.
3.1 Yes, I imagine that you will be able to change the Bios to tell it to boot from the HDD instead. But remove the M.2 if you are not going to use it - if something is defective then don't leave it in place to cause unfathomable symptoms.
3.2. I do not know how your Bios is arranged so I cannot tell you what to change. I'll have a look at mine to see if I can figure out what I'd do then post again.

So what have you bought? Both a new M.2 & a new HDD? Which models of each [so I can look them up online if you ask any questions about them later on].

    Patrice,

The only Bios entry I have that seems relevant is this. It tells the Bios which 'disks' to use.
looking for an opinion regarding drive replacement-02.02-system-configuration-drives-posted.jpg

It listed both 'disks' itself, I did not write in those details.
It tells me that 'disk' Sata-0 is my HDD. I can only be sure of that because I searched for that product name online.
It tells me that Sata-1 is my M.2. I can only be sure of that because the 'disk' has M.2 in its name.

My Bios has both ticked in the checkboxes at the top. It had them both ticked when I got the computer because it already had both the M.2 & the HDD in it.
You might find that only one of your checkboxes is ticked.
Make sure that you have ticked the checkbox[es] for the 'disks' you have fitted.

There is no separate Bios entry telling it what to boot from so make sure you only have Windows installed on one of the 'disks'.

    1. It is our understanding that batteries of all type have a life span. This one is going on 4 yrs old in Nov -- we thought since it was all open and dismantled, why not change it. When we had a desktop without power, utube said to change the battery and then it had power. Of course don't want issues if we change it. Life is getting shorter.
    2. well, that may be about the service manual. Pls be aware that there was NO screw holding it in place. There IS no screw - that's why we thought taping it down would work. I am going to insist on removing it in any case. Just wanted to let you know the situation.
    3. Bought the western dig 500gb ssd. I read a bunch of stuff by previous purchasers and all said works fine and fits my Dell fine.I am not going to buy an M2 - I will have plenty of "stuff" for my needs.

    Western Digital 500GB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s, 2.5"/7mm, Up to 560 MB/s - WDS500G3B0A

    Thank you so much again.

1 Lots of people say that changing the Bios battery is worthwhile. I have never bothered and have suffered no ill effects. Only last week I booted up a computer from 2010 and its Bios still retained all its settings despite the age of its battery. I think my semi-retired 2005 computer is also on its original battery as well but it's possible a Dell engineer who fixed its display in 2008 might have changed the battery without my noticing.
2 Sorry, misunderstood you. No screw either. Very bad working standards. I have a poor opinion about several aspects of Dell but would never have expected something that bad. Give the computer a good shake whilst upside down in case the screw is rattling around somewhere. Remove the old M.2. If you ever decide to put one back in, you'll have to ask advice about what size screw to get to fix it in place. Somebody around here will know.
    3 OK.

Image of bios very helpful. All of these areas are deep and dark to me so it's nice to see what we are talking about.
Should I close this thread and start a new one after we install the new HD? I feel the need to do so.
    Thanks so much for all.

"Image of bios very helpful. All of these areas are deep and dark to me so it's nice to see what we are talking about."
That's my Bios. Your Bios might look different but I would expect that section [System configuration, Drives] to look similar enough for the diagram to be useful.

You can look at the Bios any time you want. As you boot up and see the Dell logo onscreen, start tapping the F2 key [tap repeatedly not press & hold down] and it will take you there.
You are always able to get out of the Bios without changing anything - it will always ask if you want to Save & Exit or discard any changes and just get out.
I have a photo of every Bios screen so I can study things without having to leave Windows.

"Should I close this thread and start a new one after we install the new HD?"
    I don't see any point.
If you ask any questions that are worth putting in a new thread instead then I'll say so at the time.

And I've just found that your user manual [not the Service manual] did mention NVMe all along. It was in both the Storage section of the Specs & the Ports & connectors section on page 17.

    Table 9. Ports and connectors
    Internal:
M.2 slot • One M.2 slot for the Wi-Fi and
    Bluetooth combo card
One M.2 slot for solid-state drive
    (SATA/PCIe 3x4 NVMe)
    Technology supported PCI Express
