Samsung 32GB(impending failure flash cache RAID 0) / Hitachi 750 GB HD

    Windows 21H1 (OS Build 19043.2006)

This computer is a HP mobile workstation that came with a 750 GB HD and 32 GB flash cache in RAID 0.

There is impending failure of the 32 GB flash cache by:
    a) Reboot after Windows upgrade > HP BIOS message
    b) HD Sentinel

If the computer is in RAID 0 and the flash cache fails are there methods to use only the HD with a long boot ?

Or are there no options once the flash cache fails?
Will the RAID 0 have to be recreated to be able to boot the HD?

The computer has Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST).
    Launched using: C:\programfiles\Intel\Intel(R) RapidStorageTechnology
    (Date modified 04/19/2017)

The flash cache life span has been greater than six years.

If the flash cache is turned off should the computer be able to boot only the HD?
If it fails to boot the HD what are the troubleshooting steps?

The BIOS is legacy and the HD is MBR.

I don't know how to answer your particular question - I've never played with one of these type machines.

To be clear, this is a laptop, and it has a Samsung mSATA 32GB module on the motherboard, and a 2.5" spinner 750GB.
You believe the 32GB is being used as cache for the system.
Disk Management shows everything we would expect on one 750GB volume.
You believe there is a RAID 0 array because HD Sentinel posts it.
HD Sentinel shows the mSATA is near failure.

My understanding always was that in a RAID 0 array, the total volume would always be twice the size of the smallest disk. That's why they suggest disks of the same size. So if the mSATA was in RAID 0 with the 750 then there should only be a volume of 64GB. (Note: I've never played with RAID, don't know all that much about it).
That raises the possibility that there is no RAID array, HD Sentinel is just reading it that way.
I wonder if there is another way to test for RAID.

The easy, obvious solution to the failing drive problem is just to replace the mSATA. You already know that.
But how do we do the setup to use one for cache? That I don't know. Do you just switch them out and are good to go?

I wonder if you can test it. For instance, if you pulled the mSATA and tried to startup, would it boot? Maybe disable it in Device Manager? However, I would want a backup plan in case it wouldn't boot, even after you put the mSATA back in. (File backups, images, etc, etc).

You might look to see if you can find any information about how this configuration works, maybe from HP.
I'll take a look when I have some time. I'm curious.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

When the computer was under warranty HP had provided some help with the RAID 0.

Years ago 750 GB SSDs were expensive and HP offered factory installed flash cache on their business models to boot a HD closer to the boot speed of a SSD.

The notebook/laptop or mobile workstation computer came with a 32 GB flash cache.
The flash cache cannot be used as storage (manually saving files) and the form factor / location is very small preventing replacement with a larger size SSD.

The Crucial scanner results were posted and I'd not seen any findings of the flash cache or options for replacement.

HD Sentinel and Crystaldiskinfo were able to identify and report SMART results on both the flash cache and HD.

Neither HD Tune nor Sea Tools for Windows software were able to identify the flash cache for testing purposes.

Disk management, device manger, nor file explorer had ever displayed the flash cache.

The onboard HP UEFI hardware diagnostics for storage displayed pass for the available tests.
I'm unsure whether the flash cache was tested as the HP component tests for drives took 9 hours and did not name the Samsung drive.

If there is or isn't a flash cache replacement it may be better to replace the HD with a SSD.
There are two HD bays and one has the 750 GB HD.
    The other is empty.

It's been a very long time since I've modified the Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) software.
I remember that acceleration can be turned off which turns off RAID.
If correct this allows booting the HD as though there is no flash cache.

The links posted with the images of the IRST software displayed that the acceleration is on using the RAID 0.
It's been a very long time since I've made any changes to the software settings.

The HP warranty support is not available and I'm no longer familiar with troubleshooting steps if the RAID 0 is turned off and the HD fails to boot.
For example how the RAID 0 could be restarted if the IRST software cannot be reopened?
What can be done with starting or stopping RAID 0 in Windows Recovery Environment (RE)?
Or how to boot the computer if the RAID 0 on the flash cache fails.

Curious if you've popped the top on that notebook to look and see if you can see the mSATA module - just to see how easy it is to get to it / replace it.

You could certainly replace the spinner with an SSD but that does not seem to address the immediate problem: impending failure of the 32GB cache module.

If HP diagnostics show the cache module as good, then should you consider the reading from HD Sentinel a fluke? After all, it is probably "hard wired" on the motherboard as a cache and not a disk drive, as you've observed. Couldn't that throw off a disk management program? I can't say for sure, but it seems possible.

The HP UEFI hardware diagnostics displayed pass but I was unable to confirm that the flash cache was tested during the 9 hour test.

Crystaldiskinfo, HD Sentinel reported impending failure based on SMART data results / interpretation.

After a Windows upgrade a reboot was required and during the reboot the BIOS window reported impending failure based on SMART.

Somehow the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics does not see or does not use the SMART results of the flash cache or somehow it was not tested during the 9 hours of tests?

The flash cache appeared to be $35 for 32 GB.
A new SSD using Crucial appears to be $80.74 for 500 GB?
    Or $72.99 for 1 TB?

HP - Compaq HP ZBook 17 Mobile Workstation | Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | Crucial.com

    $72.99
    Code:
    Crucial BX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch SSD

        CT1000BX500SSD1
        Configuration ID: CT15758187

    1TB 2.5-inch internal SSD • SATA 6.0Gb/s • 540 MB/s Read, 500 MB/s Write
    $80.74
    Code:
    Crucial MX500 1TB 3D NAND SATA 2.5-inch 7mm (with 9.5mm adapter) Internal SSD

        CT1000MX500SSD1
        Configuration ID: CT11485214

    1TB 2.5-inch internal SSD • SATA 6.0Gb/s • 560 MB/s Read 510 MB/s Write

    The HD is old.

So it appears it may be best to replace the HD / flash cache RAID 0 with a SSD?

Place a SSD into a HD bay without an adapter?
    Tape it to the bay?
Or should an adapter be used?

Which of the above is a better option for a 1 TB SSD?

Are there better options than the Crucial options?
    Warranty /shipping/service, etc?

If it were hassle free I'd turn off IRST acceleration and use only the HD for the time being.
At a later time I'd consider purchasing a SSD to replace the RAID 0 HD/flash cache combo.

It might be helpful if we had the model number of this workstation, or a link to the HP product spec page. There might be some info there that would help figure this out.

The Crucial page you linked to is only telling us what upgrades they offer for memory and storage drives for the model. Keep in mind that if they don't make a replacement part you need they won't list it.

I don't think (emphasis on 'think') that you want or need a 2.5" SSD to solve the title problem. I don't know if you could set it up as cache. Even if you could, the failing module would still be in the system, ready to blink out - what happens then?

In post #1 you show HD Sentinel reports that lists the 32GB Hard Disk Model ID as SAMSUNG MZMPF032HCFV-000H1.
That Samsung model is a mSATA module. Looking up the model on the web shows that it looks like this:
    Attention Required! | Cloudflare

mSATA is a Mini-SATA card. These seem to be old tech and you might find it difficult to find one new. More info:
    Serial ATA - Wikipedia

From everything you've posted and the things I've read I believe you need to replace that mSATA module with a known good one. I'm not saying that's easy. You will definitely want to be sure that specs match (not necessarily storage capacity).
A quick search shows some good possibilities and a wild price differential. I did not dig deep enough to determine why. See here:

But I do believe that is the direction you want to be focusing on.

    Code:
Intel Smart Response Technology (select models only)
Intel® Smart Response Technology (SRT) is an Intel® Rapid Storage Technology (RST) caching feature that
    significantly enhances computer system performance.

SRT allows computers with an SSD mSATA module to be used as cache memory between the system memory
    and hard disk drive.

This provides the advantage of having a hard disk drive (or a RAID volume) for maximum storage
capacity while simultaneously delivering SSD enhanced system performance experience.

If you add or upgrade a hard drive and intend to set a RAID volume, you must temporarily disable
SRT, set the RAID volume, and then enable SRT.

    To temporarily disable SRT:
    1. From the Start screen, type Intel, and then select Intel Rapid Storage Technology.
    2. In the Status link under Performance, click the Disable link.
    3. Wait for the Acceleration Mode to complete.
    4. Click the Enable link.

IMPORTANT: You must temporarily disable SRT when changing RAID modes.
Make the change and then re-enable SRT.
Failure to temporarily disable this feature will prevent you from creating or changing RAID volumes.
NOTE: HP does not support SRT with self-encrypting drives (SEDs).

The 750 GB HD passed the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics.
It had had some chkdsk runs with finding bad sectors.
HD Sentinel reported that bad sectors were moved to a spare area.
Within a year or two it's likely that this HD will fail.
Purchasing a flash cache now and a HD later is likely to have lower performance than using only a SSD.

If it's possible I'd like to continue using the computer and move to HD only.
If there is a very slow boot then this may speed up the need for a SSD.
Until the RAID is turned off I'm unsure how to troubleshoot a failed RAID 0.
If that requires a reestablishment of RAID 0 before the HD can be used again then the flash cache must be purchased?
If that does not require the reestablishment of RAID 0 then I'll use only the HD.
If the RAID 0 can be turned off now I'll do that if that assures the use of the HD.

Oh, I see where you are going now.
Yes, your plan to ditch the cache and just go SSD is sound.
With one caveat: If the hard disk controller in the workstation is SATA 2 - 3Gb/s - then you may be less than pleased with the speed of the PC. I don't see this controller spec anywhere. But I did see that the mSATA is running at SATA 3 - 6Gb/s.
Probably a good thing to check first.

The CODE section you posted tells a lot. It says that if you wanted to install 2 hard drives in the workstation and create a RAID with them then you must disable the Smart Reponse Technology (SRT) before doing so, then after you've created the RAID you can re-enable SRT.
This tells me that you could disable the SRT now and just boot from the HDD - to test or make changes. Or disable when you might install a SSD. It would seem to be entirely switchable - on and off - without concern about the no-boot scenario.
It also indicates to me that the mSATA is in RAID 0 by itself, since it says you would have trouble creating an actual RAID array with SRT turned on.

Where are the disk controller specs usually found?

Which third party software typically has this information?

Will it display speeds only for the installed drive or the possible range for any drive?

This was displayed in the HD Sentinel results:
