Can't Change the Description of a Printer Port

I moved my desktop PC to another room and had printing issues so reinstalled the drivers for my Brother laser printer and Cannon Pro 100.

The Canon printer works but it is now described as the Brother printer. I can't configure the port to change the description. How do I fix this - is there a utility to do this?

You could search the registry for "Canon PRO-100" and see if you can edit the description there.

    Steve,

What does Control panel, Devices & printers have to say on the matter?
That's where you can normally rename printers.

Perhaps the uninstallation of the printers failed to complete before you reinstalled their drivers and that's why they are showing up on the wrong ports???

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Does the Brother printer shown still exist? If not may have to do a full removal of the Brother and Canon software and reinstall Canon letting it's software set up the port as needed. I've never seen 2 different printers share a port yet.

The printer configuration has got totally mangled somehow. So far I've uninstalled everything using Revo and removed all Canon & Brother printers including hidden ones in Device Manager. I then reinstalled the Brother printer using the DVD supplied with it which seems to have a more thorough installer than the online version. So far so good. I'll try reinstalling the Canon software tomorrow. Ideally I'd like a program which removes all printer drivers to start afresh.

Devices & Printers never shows the Brother printer even when correctly configured and working

I had already found a few instances of that but was wary of hacking the registry

You can either export (backup) the specific key(s) or make a full system image. If they key(s) you found indicate that they are a description then the risk would be minimal especially if you have an exported copy.

That's probably the key to zap previous drivers I haven't used before. Does the removal via printmanagement.msc and printui /s /t2 effectively do the same thing?

I tried to give Try3 more rep but I've given Try3 too much rep!
