HP 4620 Printer Problem....prints very faintly.

    Hi All,
It's been awhile since I posted on the Forum, basically because I've not really had any pc problems. I have a HP 4620 Officejet printer that for some reason when printing a document prints 'very faintly' (really unreadable). I don't use the printer that often, but recently I needed to print off some important documents, so I purchased 'genuine HP' 364 (recommended) printer cartridges (quite expensive). After the first failed attempt to print a document, I ran all the allignment tests, printer head cleaning etc. All I could get was a test page printout that showed all the colours clearly, so logically I'm thinking the cartridges are not at fault.
I've uninstalled the HP printer software, and reinstalled it. This has usually sorted out any printer problems in the past....all to no avail. You will notice at the top of my screenshot...very faint text.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

My Windows version is: 21H2 (OS Build 19044, 1889)

It looks like the Blank Ink cartridge is empty or not being used properly. The dark in the test sheet shows that it is mostly grey, meaning it is using the color cartridge to print Black. So the Black cartridge is Empty and needs to be replaced or clean the contact on the Black Cartridge

The test print clearly shows a problem with the Black Ink. Maybe the cartridge or more likely the tubes or black printhead.

The cartridge is basically a sponge full of ink, it may have dried up somewhat, you may just be unlucky.
Maybe test by dabbing a tissue on the bit that connects to the printer.

Printheads are expensive, and tricky/messy to clean requiring a solvent for the pigmented black ink, using tubes and syringe.

    Thanks for your replies.
The brand new genuine HP multipack which I only purchased a coupe of weeks ago, included a cartridge of black ink.
I will double check that the cartridges are inserted correctly, and try printing a document again. Since I bought the printer 2 or 3 years ago, I've only ever had to replace the cartridges a couple of times. Shows how much printing I normally do.
I have taken your comments on board. Everything connected with printers seems unduly expensive and if I can't resolve this current problem, I doubt I'll ever buy a printer again. If I have any joy, I will report back. Thanks again.

    Milton,

When I experienced this & the standard de-clogging procedures did not resolve it, I rubbed the cartridge's working surfaces with paper towels [kitchen towels] for a minute or so. This was the gentlest form of hard scrubbing I could think of and it worked.

I eventually gave up on inkjet printers altogether & bought myself a combined laserprinter-scanner.
    - I resented the cost but decided it would be well worth it for avoiding the repeated hassle of cleaning through little-used inkjet printers.
    - That was over four years ago and there hasn't been a single problem scanning or printing. I do so little printing these days that I have still not used up the sample toner that came in the machine.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Thanks for help and suggestions with my printer issue. From your comments, it was suggested the problem was with the 'black ink cartridge, so I took a chance and bought a new black ink cartridge (locally)....the new cartridges I had bought just a few weeks ago on Amazon appeared on the 'ink levels' to be nearly 'empty' ???
I'm guessing they were probably 'old stock' and on further examination of the packaging, it had (c) 2020. So almost 2 years old.
Anyway, I inserted the brand new blank ink cartridge that I had bought 'locally' and hey presto.....it printed a readable document.
So thanks again guys for your help.

    Milton,

I hope Amazon do not give you hassle over your well-deserved refund.

If I have a complaint that is any way unusual, I go to
    www.amazon.co.uk/contact-us

    then
    either
step through until I reach the 'I need more help' item,
    or
click on 'Something else', Contact us
so I can use their Chat facility to explain what the problem is up-front

    Thanks for the rep,
    All the best,
    Denis

    Hello @Milton,

Unfortunately, you have to be so careful when buying ink cartridges these days. My Brother-in-Law bought some paying good money for them, and it turned out they were only half full, believe it or not.

It is always best to buy from a reputable seller, or if you are buying from eBay for example, check their returns policy and customer reviews.

I must admit that Amazon have always been excellent when it come to things like this.

    I hope this helps.
