    First of all, check DiskMgmt.
    C:\Windows\System32\diskmgmt.msc

Maybe it's this Disk2, I don't see it in ThisPC. When I right-click it, various commands appear in a popup, but all are ghosted.

Drive 2 isn't formatted as NTFS (may have other format) and has no letter assigned to it.

Did you use it on Mac or Linux?

I agree that the greyed out commands indicate that Windows does not recognise the formatting of that disk.

The normal response would be to format it to make it ready for use but since you have data on it that you want to rescue, you need to consider data recovery procedures. The forum member that I suggest you seek help from on this topic is @jumanji
so don't do anything at all to the disk whilst awaiting his guidance - every action taken risks making the situation worse.

If the data is recovered, you will have to consider whether or not you will trust that disk in the future.
    - I duplicate all my backup disks to avoid the situation you are in. If one of my backup disks goes wrong then I replace it and use the good one to recover files. If I manage to recover any later versions of files from the bad disk then that's a bonus.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

Denis, yes this situation occurred after a few things.

    1. I installed Linux as a dual boot with W10. all was well until it wasn't, grub came up empty on both OSs.

    2. I had a saved system image but my boot CD for restoring it wouldn't work. so I installed a new Linux. then, I didn't like it. Aomei, the image save restore company, sent me a utility ISO I burned on my other pc, then booted it and
formatted and then restored the image.

    3. Win10 booted fine but popped an alert about an unrecognized USB device, I'm sure now this Seagate.

    4. no more Linux for me.

so I'll try to get in touch with your guy next before I do anything else. no free support at Seagate, too old.

    @Beldar,

What is your other PC PC #2? What OS does it have?

Can you please plug in your Seagate external to that other PC and post a screenshot of Windows Disk Management? Please follow the guidelines here, hiding the Cosole tree, Action Pane and adjust the seperators so that the full information is seen.

Right now I don't have any clue on what could have happened and so further investigation may be necessary.

On your PC #1 (on which you have restored Windows 10????? or is that Windows 7)), Install Partition Wizard Free version 9.1 ( download from Download MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition 9.1 for windows - Filepuma.com)

Plug in the seagate external and run Partition Wizard 9.1. If it pops up saying a newer version is available say no and dismiss it. Launch PW9.1 and post a screenshot of how your Seagate external looks like in it. - the very first screen that appears when you launch PW9.1.

Since I am on the other side of the globe ( the local time now is 22:53) I will be hitting the sack now in another one hour or so, and will see your post my tom. morning that is after another 10 hours.
