My CD Drive will play programs but doesn't recognise music

    I'm running Windows 10 Home Version 21H1 (Build 19043.1826)

On both my laptop and desktop PC I can't read Audio CD's, it will read a program CD but not music.
I've tried opening Windows Media Player first but as soon as I insert a CD it closes down, if I insert a CD without starting any programs I get Windows Explorer saying 'Drag files to this folder to add them to the disc' which would imply that it's looking to burn a disc?

    Anyone had this before?

    TIA

Check to see if any files are waiting to be burned:
C:\Users\YOUR USERNAME\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Burn If there is then delete everything in the burn folder.
Ensure you don’t require the files before doing this.

    Also try resetting WMP:
Type msdt.exe -id WindowsMediaPlayerConfigurationDiagnostic in Start run and hit Enter to open the troubleshooting wizard which will help you reset WMP to default settings.

Are you playing a Burned Disc, or a regular store bought CD Album?
If a burned disc, is it a CD/RW disc as opposed to a CD-R?
You can download VLC player which will play just about any media file on disc or computer.

With the disc in, go to This PC does it show the drive with the Disc in it? If so, double click it.
Also, you can press the Windows key+X and choose Disk Management. In the lower pane it should show your DVD drive, does it show it as a disc in it?
If not, the DVD drive is not reading your disc, the CD reading laser may have failed.
If it shows the disc, have you tried VLC player?

Hi, yes I disabled WMP, rebooted, re-enabled it and rebooted it again. Still no joy

Thanks for that, it says CD-ROM 0, DVD 2.00GB Online, then in the box next to it it says (E:) 2.00GB RAW Healthy (Primary Partition)
I tried the VLC player, it came back with an error: 'Your input can't be opened' then underneath it says 'VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd:///E:/. Check log for details

Incidentally I just tried a DVD and it played perfectly on the VLC player, it just doesn't recognise audio cd's????

From my experience cd's today are burnt very fast and not very deep so. Even a tiny particle of dust or if you smoke will block the laser bulb from reading the disk. you may be able to get a finger or q-tip to gently rub the dust off. I personally have a laser light cleaner i got many years ago. works like a maricle. they still sell them very cheap. its basically just a dvd/cd with 2 very small brushes on it. just do not push hard on the laser it is spring loaded it could bend. hope that helps. rubbing alcohol for better cleaning.

the only other thing i can think of is bad disk or scratches, dirty. warm water and lightly clean disk from center to edge no circles. or if you have moved from another country regional setting of the drive can only be changed 4 times and it locks. hmmm

If that dont work and you know the disk is ok. if you have anything even a playstation to try to play the cd, anything and it is ok. I would be starting to wonder if there is a music file sharing issue since i see previous it shows dvd online? which is odd.

    Then i see this

7 Proven Ways to Fix "VLC is unable to open MRL" Error

Way 1. Make sure the source content is working.
Way 2. Decrypt the source DVD.
    Way 3. Disable Windows Firewall.
Way 4. Turn off Third-Party Antivirus Software.
    Way 5. Claim File Ownership.
Way 6. Reinstall VLC Media Player.
Way 7. Use Another Media Player.
