I had a weird issue recently. It was a laptop with dual graphics, Intel and AMD. Once Windows Update automatically installed the AMD graphics driver everything on the desktop, all icons and open app windows were disappeared and I had an empty desktop where I could not interact. The mouse pointer was hidden too and pressing any key on the keyboard, including the Win key or CTRL+ALT+DEL had no visible effect. Waiting for the driver to "finish" installing made no difference. I forced shutdown the computer holding the power key and switched on again. I again saw an empty desktop with the taskbar where I could do nothing, not even login.

First attempt to fix it: I forced shutdown the computer and interrupted the startup process three times so I eventually managed to enter the Recovery mode. I selected the advanced startup options and then started the computer in Safe mode where I could access Device Manager. Apparently the AMD driver was installed but had some bug. First I tried to uninstall the AMD driver so I could then install the latest official driver I had downloaded from AMD's site. No use, once loading in Normal mode, Windows Update installed the faulty driver again after a while resulting in the empty desktop with the taskbar.

The solution: I once again booted in Safe mode as described above and this time I replaced the AMD driver with Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. This time Windows Update ignored the graphics card, didn't try to install the faulty driver, so I could run the setup of the official AMD driver I had downloaded. This made it and I could finally had a working AMD graphics card with full 3D acceleration. For some other unknown reason I could not access the AMD Control Panel (the error message read that no appropriate AMD card was detected), but that's another story. I just wanted to share to help other posters with the same issue.
