Just because PolarNettles post contradicted yours, it does not mean that it is off-topic.

It's not my assertions, it's the reality of the market as close as possible to the problem of tech.

The PolarNettles post doesn't contradict me, it goes into technical details far from tech. problem, details that I had already seen including the table. It may interest tech., not me for the moment to deepen and learn the technical details of m.2 ssd and their m.2 port.

I can read on the web very technical things in several fields for hours, days and months, also in this forum on posts for which I know nothing by curiosity. but the m.2 ports and their ssd, no desire, at least for the moment.

PolarNettles says that the key type does not dictate the interface type [SATA/NVME] but you say differently.
    PolarNettles said:
    Motherboard/enclosure sockets are either B- or M-keyed.
... both key types support both SATA and PCIe (NVMe) so you can't tell from the physical connector which protocol is being used.

    All the best,

I haven't really deepened the m.2 slots. For me an "M" slot key was nvme and sata backward compatible, and a "B" slot key was sata.

It doesn't really change things. We lack software or knowledge to know the type of m.2 slot. With hwinfo we can know if the slot is pci express, the version and the lane number, but not the type of key and if it is sata. You must then first open the laptop or the side of the desktop computer, and then use hwinfo for the "M" key slots, it should be at least nvme if the manufacturer has done things right. For slot key "B" you have to stick to the m.2 ssd market. If the computer manufacturer has done things right, slot B should be sata compatible for m.2 key B&M ssds.

brummyfan didn't answer or it's not the same person, tech should buy a m.2 key B&M ssd and give it back if it's not compatible. Same with m.2 key M slots if it is not pci express. It's not ideal.
Personally if I didn't know the type of slot I wouldn't buy an m.2 ssd.

I normally read the user or service manual for the computer or motherboard. That method has not failed me yet.

Not for me either. The problem begins with with OEM computers, specially laptops.
On those manuals (same manual for a wide range of computers) is common to find an item with "where applicable" remark hat doesn't help much.

I just went to acer india on his laptop page, in drivers and manual there are only drivers and applications.

I searched translated into Hindi language "acer 315 51_z manual" or "315 51_z m.2 slot" I have nothing 1 or 2 link, my search engine is not in Hindi that's why I think.

Yeah most manuals will cover the information.

All the nvme sticks I have seen have only one notch. All the sata sticks I have seen have two.

Maybe the opposite exist, but I havent seen any.

@brummyfan Assuming you are the same brummyfan who posted in the Acer forum, please could you confirm that the OP's "Acer laptop (model A315-51_Z)" has a SATA M.2 as I think you are saying in the thread found by TV2?

    All the best,
    Denis
Sorry for the very late response, yes, this model supports only M.2.SATA drives, I missed the -z part of the model name when I sent the PM, sorry.

    Dear friends,

I bought an Acer laptop (model A315-51_Z) with Windows 10 on it in 2018. Just a few days ago, I tried to install an M.2 NVME SSD from Samsung, but it did not show up in BIOS at all. I am not sure what went wrong then or what I did wrong. Please guide me. Since this laptop is out of warranty, Acer could not offer any help. Thanks.

I did that recently in a Dell laptop and had to set AHCI mode in the BIOS for it to be recognised.
