    The brother website is confusing.

    This page says: Windows® 98(SE)/ Me/ 2000/ XP/ XP Pro x64 Edition

    Specifications | MFC-240C | United States | Brother

This page says: Windows 10 (64-bit) is supported.

    Supported OS | MFC-240C | United States | Brother

    Which is it?

Windows 10 contains a basic driver for that Brother printer which it retrieves from Windows updates.

That is what is considered "compatible with Windows".

However, the reality is that driver is not fully featured like the original. Those missing features may or may not matter.

I had an old printer like that and whilst it was considered "compatible" in compatibility lists the basic driver lacked ink volume control which was rather essential on mine.
Bought a new windows 10 compatible printer which solved the problem.

18 years is pretty much EOL for a printer.

in that case, it's time to get a new printer/scanner device (even a new Brother printer that is fully compatible with Win10 made in at least 2009 or newer that has full featured printer drivers + scan software), maybe look for some on eBay

Does Brother have user forums where you can discuss the problem with other users of your model?

    Best of luck,

I hope this isn't a "let them eat cake" response, but Vuescan is claimed to support the Brother MFC-230c. Brother MFC-240C Scanner Driver and Software | VueScan It's paid software, but there is a free trial so you could try before you buy.

I'm a little surprised that the Windows Update drivers don't include support for scanning, but I don't have any MFDs that are that old.

There's the usual question about how much effort and expense is worthwhile for supporting old hardware.
