"No disc in drive" when burning a CD.

I reset my Win10 laptop (wiping everything) less than a month ago, and haven't used it much since then, particularly haven't used the CD drive.

Today I tried burning some files to a CD, and Windows Media Player goes through the motions but then quits and tells me to insert a disc in the drive, even though I did.

I downloaded some burning software, and it also says there is no disc in the drive.

Yet, I can play CDs no problem.

    What do I do?

    "What do I do?"

    Buy some new writable discs.

Writable discs ATIP info needs to be read for writing strategy. If that cannot be read then it will say no disc in drive.

If you are trying to use old discs or they have been stored in bad conditions they may become unusable.

You need to initialise disks from file explorer. It asks you if you want to use it more like a standard cd, or more like a usb drive. In most cases, select standard.

Once initialised, wmp should recognise dosks.

Yes, I did get a dialog that asked me how I wanted to use the CD. I chose standard.

Tried again, and made note of the exact error message that WMP gives me:

Windows Media Player cannot burn the files. If the burner is busy, wait for the current task to finish. If necessary, verify that the burner is connected properly and that you a have installed the latest device driver.
    1. The burner (disk drive) is definitely busy as it's trying to burn some files, lol.
    2. The drive has never been disconnected since I bought the laptop, so it's obviously connected properly (especially since it does play discs).
    3. I went through Device Manager and tried to reinstall the drivers, but Windows says the latest/best drivers are already installed.

It is probable easier just to buy a new drive. I had a dvd writer that was temperamental, and I concluded drive was getting old. Back in the day, you could get laser head cleaners that often sorted this sort of issue. Not used one for years though.

I bought a new one and it installed fine and it just works.

There goes the sale value on the laptop when I sell it in the near future. It already has one broken hinge that I'm hoping Best Buy can fix. Maybe they can fix the CD drive as well.

Over the years I have gone through more CD/DVD/Player/Burners than I care to admit and not once has a DVD cleaner ever worked, and I have certainly tried. I think I've bought probably half a dozen or so of them and nada - nothin'.

I think I must be magnetic/radioactive or something...
