    Amazon.com

To max out this enclosure, you need to connect to a USB 3.2 Gen 2 port (10Gbps) or a USB-C 10Gbps port. However, that port maxes out around ~1200MB/sec. So, you are seriously limiting the potential of that Samsung 980 Pro by running it in an external enclosure. I went with a Crucial P2 1TB drive for my enclosure. I get about 1100MB/sec on that drive. That's still about 1/2 of what it's capable of.

So maybe i should have got a different M.2 ssd, as the 980 is overkill

mine gets warm...but nothing alarming by any means. But it's a Gen 3 NVMe that it's only capable of around 2400MB/sec read and 1800MB/sec write...and I'm getting about 1100MB/sec total....so not pushing it hard either.

I just feel like having a drive capable of 7,000MB/sec limited to ~1000MB/sec to be kinda sad.
Interesting. All of my numbers are about exactly the same thing. In my case, I'm using 1TB Silicon Power PCIe 3 NVMe. I use faster drives inside my desktop, but just like you said, that would be wasted in an external enclosure.

The Silicon Power 1TB was about $77 a few weeks ago, but I see it is now like $85. Price of everything has been going up lately.

Well, you can look up the specs online. Generally speaking, 10Gbps USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports are on the rare side for laptops. Normally they have a little tag that says 10 on them.

USB C ports are more obvious as they are a different connector altogether.

From your specs, it shows an HP Zbook G5. Looking at the docs, it seems that has 2 thunderbolt ports on the rigtht and they support USB 3.2 Gen 2...so that should work to max out around 1GB/sec.

What a waste to install a drive that is very fast
Max Sequential Read Up to 7000 MBps
Max Sequential Write Up to 5000 MBps
to a USB case that will limit Sequential Read to 1.200 MBps
