Mouse is stuck in one spot -- ah, USB hub is the culprit?

My mouse has suddenly gotten "stuck" to one spot (bottom of screen, toward the right).

If I move the mouse, the sprite jitters around but it always snaps back to its "home." Same behavior for built-in Synaptics trackpad and USB mouse.

I found a Microsoft post here that gave some suggested solutions. I uninstalled every device under "Universal Serial Bus controllers" and "Mice and other Pointing Devices" and rebooted. The problem seems to clear up when I delete the "Generic USB Hub," but as soon as I rescan or reboot, the mouse is lassoed again.

I ran the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter.
I ran all the suggested dism and sfc commands.

    No luck.

    Help?

Aha! I just tried unplugging the USB hub, and the mouse worked! My USB mouse is NOT plugged into that hub, but into an internal USB jack on the laptop. Do I just assume the hub is hosed, or is there perhaps something that might get it working?

I would restart your computer with the USB hub disconnected and after restart I would open device manger and then plug the hub back in and see if there are any errors (yellow triangle)

Nope, no errors. It created several USB Controller devices, but there were no new errors. Mouse is still trapped on the bottom of the screen.

That hub is no good. I've had a similar issue in the past where I bought a black web USB 3.0 hub, and whenever I plugged anything into the hub, the devices would go wonky. It wouldn't even detect my USB 3.0 external drive, or my 3.0 flash drive. It would detect my 2.0 drives. If I plugged in my keyboard or mouse, the mouse would stutter a lot and become unusable. Even the system would freeze. Tested it on multiple machines and same problem. I had to get a replacement hub, which worked, so Maybe you got a bad one

Yeah that's what I suspected. I ordered a replacement yesterday. The hub has been working fine for a couple of years, and everything plugged into the hub (keyboard, speaker/mike, webcam) works fine. But I can't move the mouse. Not sure if the hub thinks it has a phantom mouse plugged in or what ...

OK I don't wanna, but I gotta come clean ...

I started unplugging devices from the hub to decommission it. After one device, the mouse broke free! What device was that? Oh I recently got a Bamboo pad. And ... um ... the pen had gotten bumped so it was close enough to register with the pad. So that's where the sprite stayed, regardless of what the mouse or trackpad said.

D'oh !!! I'm an idiot. But the hub is just fine ...
