0xc0000005 trying to install Dell Optiplex 9010 BIOS update

Trying to install BIOS update O9010A30.exe for Dell Optiplex 9010. When I try to run it I get the following.
Account is Administrator and I've tried it with Open and Run as Administrator and run from a Administrator Command Prompt.
Fails the same way every time.
    EXE is not locked.
BIOS is currently at version A15.

I don't know why it's failing. Have you tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows 7? The utility actually restarts the PC and runs the BIOS update outside of Windows, so the OS shouldn't matter (as long as the utility runs).

Another way of installing it is to run it from a DSO bootable USB drive. https://www.dell.com/support/home/es...d=90dd2&lwp=rt

Looks like the easiest way to create a DOS bootable USB using Rufus. How to Create a Bootable DOS USB Drive

Booted DOS and ran it from there. Turned out I was misspelling the name of the program. It's O9010A30, not 09010A30 (O not 0 as first character).
Figured that out in DOS and ran it successfully from there.

    Thanks @bobkn

Ah. You might have been able to run it from Windows by double clicking on the exe.

It would have been safe enough. The actual BIOS update doesn't run from Windows. The PC restarts into another environment, and the BIOS update runs there. (I haven't done a Dell BIOS update in years, but their process seemed fairly robust.)

It wouldn't start from Explorer in Windows, I double clicked on it and right clicked and selected Open, but it worked from DOS so I'm happy.

    Rich,

Are you having problems running any other exe files from File explorer?
One of NirSoft's portable utilities would be a suitably innocuous test file if you haven't got anything else to hand - e.g. WifiInfoView - WiFi Scanner for Windows 10/7/8/Vista
