    SSD Issue

I have a Dell Precision 7760. It has a Samsung PM9A1 2TB SSD. This is the OEM version of a 980 Pro. Last weekend I ran a firmware update recommended by Dell. The update was successful and did not ask to reboot. I rebooted and on this first boot the drive was not seen. I rebooted again and the drive was found and booted fine.

In windows both Crystal Disk Info and HD Sentinel report the drive is fine and no issues found.

I decided to run the Dell Boot Diagnostics and the drive failed the short test. I ran it several times and it failed the short test again. I did not run the diag before I did the firmware update.

I did make an Acronis image before I initially updated the drive firmware so had a backup.

This drive had bit locker enabled and I decided to turn it off. I started the bit locker process and it got stuck at 77.7% I have another post on that but since the question I have is a hardware issue I am posting it here as a new post.

Before I started the bitlocker process, I exited dropbox. After I saw bitlocker was stick, I also went online and unlinked the computer from DB. I spent a day doing things to try and get the decryption to continue to include many force shutdown since the system kept locking up and had no luck. This included using a command prompt to pause the bit locker decryption but every time I resumed, system was essentially locked up. I finally got it to decrypt by deleting all the files I had in my Dropbox folder on the computer. Around 750 GB.

After it fully decrypted, I ran the boot diagnostic several times and it passed. I ran both the thorough and quick tests and it passed.

I did run chkdsk /f before and after deleting the DB files and it shows no bad sectors. I also ran sfc /scannow and no issues found.

So question is, is it a faulty drive or did something happen either with the firmware update or something else that by deleting the DropBox files it fixed itself and the drive is fine? I am debating on if it is ok to keep using the drive or time for a new one?

Here is the post on decrypting which is resolved.

    Bitlocker Stuck Decrypting

    thanks.

Hard to say what was wrong and why it fixed.
Try to enable bitlocker and sync DB again and then test the drive.

System images do not capture drive firmware.
You'll only be able to undo the firmware update if Dell have provided a means of doing so.
You might find that repeating the firmware update might fix any problem with the previous one by overwriting it. But I have never heard of anybody trying this and have never seen any relevant guidance. And it might merely find that its firmware number is already at the level of the attempted re-run and simply refuse to proceed.

I think that the incident has nothing directly to do with the firmware.
Perhaps the firmware update was supposed to finish with a reboot but didn't. I've definitely seen that with some Dell hardware driver updates that were supposed to reboot.
And perhaps its reboot was supposed to allow the Bios to adjust some setting or other to the new firmware.
So perhaps you did manually what Dell should have finished by doing automatically for you.
In which case, you have no disk problem - which I think your diagnostics reports also say.

Thanks for the replies. This is an odd issue.

The dell Diagnostics noted if failed the short test every time I ran it after the firmware update and I ran this test probably 10 times all after reboots. It only passed after I deleted the DB files and get the decrypting to finish. Now one thing I do not know is if the Diagnostic would have failed before I did this recent firmware update. I did not test first.

With the firmware update, as part of trouble shooting, I did downgrade it. I ran the previous update and it completed successfully and showed in the drive's firmware under device manager. I wound up updating to the latest one again thinking that would fix the diagnostic error; however, the Diagnostic still reported errors (this is before deleting the DB files).

I guess the question is even though it passes the tests now, could there be an issue that will surface again. I have not tried installing DB again yet so have not tested it with that. I might not bother turning bitlocker on again either.

I am curious what the issue is. However, I might just replace the drive and use the image before I did the firmware update.

    thanks again.

How old is the new firmware and is there a fix in it you need? It seems everything works fine for you with the old firmware, so maybe the new one has a bug.

Have you reported this to Dell?

It came out on 1/17/22. I probably should have waited.

The fix is - Improved the solid state drive data management to prevent data integrity issues. This was a recommended update and not urgent. It showed up in the Dell Command Update.

Dell is not aware of any issues but will send a new drive. However, it is back ordered.

Sending you the drive under warranty?

Yes. It is a warranty item. Just not sure when it will show up. I am trying to determine if it is safe to use the one I have before reinstalling DB and my files or just wait.

I would run "chkdsk /scan /perf C:" and see what it reports. If no issues and based on other health checks, I'd be inclined to keep using it.

You have made an image backup IIRC.

Using Acronis, I made a backup before i did the firmware update. One after before decrypting, one when I was able to pause decrypting, and one after decrypted 100% and when there were no errors reported.

what does the "chkdsk /scan /perf C:" do compared to "chkdsk /f"?
