    Hi @Neuro

If you can post a screenshot of Hard Disk Sentinel which will give an instant response, we will know the health and how many bad sectors are there. If the text information is in German, you have to provide an english translation of it.

Alongwith it post a full screenshot of Windows Disk Management with only your faulty 4TB WD Western Digital elements external plugged in.. Follow the guidelines here to present full information

    Hi everyone,
I tried to copy files using Linux as described by Paul Black. I am not used to Linux so I simply tried to copy the files on the new HDD. Some files where smoothely copied while others resulted in an error (Error splicing file: Input/output error). However, while at first I could mount the HDD this stopped now and I am not able to access the HDD via Linux anymore (it is listed but I am unable to mount it). In Windows I have limited access. After several minutes sometimes the drive can be opened but eventually freezes leading to a black screen and an unresponsive computer.
Is there any other tool that I can use or can I assume all data are irretrievable lost?

Sorry, @jumanji I did not see your posting. Here are the required screenshots.

Here is a translation of the report:
Failure possible - Attribute 1 raw read error rate. During reading of the raw data errors were detected. This suggests problems with the surface or the ´read-and-write heads of the drive.
There are 577 bad sectors on the surface. These can be remapped during later use.

    HDD needs to replaced immediately.
It is recommended to backup data to prevent data loss.

    Hi @Neuro,
Your disk cannot be accessed now even with Linux. It is completely dead. Nothing can be done with it now.

That's really unfortunate. Is there any programm that I can try to recover or is there absolutely nothing that can be done here?

I believe what the distinguished disk Guru said is conclusive.

Unfortunately, I agree with @jumanji, and if anyone would know, he would know, trust me.

I have a few options which have worked in the past and got my data backed up. You could potentially need a few items.

If you do ever get chance to see the drive in Windows at any point, please first re take ownership of the disk as 'Administrators' and make sure you have also ticked the Sub directory check box to fully get permissions back, then remove and clear all the older permissions that you can see, get rid of the lot. Remove ALL inheritable permissions which are in both 'Permissions' and 'Audit' tabs. Clear the lot.

Now re add yourself again as into the Permissions again as 'Administrators' and give yourself full control and also the checkbox at the bottom which says 'Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object' It will make ALL of your permissions stick to all files, which is what you want.

Next re add 'Users' but do this from the first Security tab so it only adds read a write permissions. You could give Users full permissions if you wanted to, to make sure it all works, no harm for this.

Next re add 'SYSTEM' as a user and give him full permission control.

Go back and edit the Permissions where you added yourself as Administrators, highlight the Admin and re click the 'Replace all child object permission entries with inheritable permission entries from this object' again for the 2nd time, just to make sure youre in full control of everything.

If you seriously cant see the drive in Windows, then option 2 and access a bootable operating system disc and load up the Windows install disc
Try booting the install DVD to the setup section and goto 'Repair this computer', select the Advanced option and load up the Command Prompt. Here you want to load up 'Diskpart' to intially see if the drive is still alive which can be fettled with. Ive messed about with Diskpart alot. If you can see the drive and dont really know what to do, hold fire and we'll take it from there.

If you cant see the drive in command prompt from setup, then our last option, and try and get yourself an external USB drive case setup to fit your drive into and connect through USB using the same option from the DVD. Edit: Forgot to say about the USB access. For this, you'll need to change the drives permissions to 'Everyone' which gives you access from a read only state.

Have you got a bootable Windows DVD? With say Windows 10 ? Or Win8.1? Either will do. Good idea that they are both UEFI and LEGACY bootable discs. It would be good to have a 2nd computer in this task so you can communicate whilst youre 'live'

    we'll take it from there

If the data on the drive is critical, you can send it off to a Data Recovery Center where they can o[pen the drive up in a Clean Room to extract the data. Most people cannot afford this option.
