    @Whistleboy,

    Ahh, Storage Spaces, I almost went there with this. At issue here is that fact that Storage Spaces is implemented as a Virtual disk. So anytime there is an issue with a disk or one is disconnected it will cause an RAW state to be displayed in Windows Disk Management. This is expected behavior and does not indicate a loss of data in most cases. Remedies are:

    In Disk Management take the Storage Spaces disk Offline, then bring the disk Online. Once online the RAW state should change to reflect the file system being used. If that fails,

    Replace missing disk or dialed disk.

    Your Hard Disk Sentinel screens look good to me.

    The HD Sentinel results were fine.
    The SMART results attempt to predict drive failure.
    In Ten Forums we see drives with SMART (> 90%) that have failed Sea Tools long generic testing.

    So if there is any doubt the comprehensive testing is best.

    The long generic and full error scans can run overnight.

    Thanks you guys. Those HD Sentinel tests were done only on the drives that did not cause any problems. I am now going to experiment by adding each of my 12TB drives to see what we find.

    Well, since my last post, everything has been working well. Last night I put my computer to Sleep (Start > Power > Sleep), when I woke it up this morning, my new 8TB drive doesn't even show up in Disk Management, or under Manage Storage Spaces. I'm at a complete loss...

    ...and upon rebooting, I was able to see the 8TB drive in BIOS. When I rebooted to Windows, the drive showed up and everything appears fine. I really don't get what is happening here...is there something unique to "Sleep" that could cause issues?

    How are these drives connected to your PC? Are the internal SATA connections or external USB? What you describe is an initialization failure which is most common with USB attached hardware. If these disks are attached internally then I would suspect faulty cables. If you are using cheap cables replace them with premium ones. When it comes to cabling you definitely get what you pay for!

    Thank you. The drives are all connected via internal SATA. However, I had just been wondering if I should just try a different cable. I'm using the cables that came with my ASUS TUF X570-Plus (Wi-Fi). Appreciate the suggestion.

    That may be worth trying. The only drives I've had convert to RAW have been External USB HDDs where the control interface/circuit board in their case had failed. That interface is what allows such drives to be used on different Operating Systems such as Mac and PC, even Linux. It could also be an issue with the motherboard and the drive controller system, had a MacBook Pro drive controller with Mac OS X fail just as macOS came out.

    I appreciate your time and experience, Berton. I know the thread is getting longer, but I mentioned early on that my drives first went RAW on a different motherboard. Then I got a new motherboard AND new drives and the problem repeated itself. Both times the drives were set up in RAID 1 (two-way mirror). The system has now been stable (mostly) with a new internal HDD with no redundancy until the weird thing this morning where the drive didn't "wake-up" with the PC. Ugh...so far so good since a reboot, but I will change out the cables at a minimum.
