Perfect, if you have the time go straight to Level 3.
I have scanned the HDD with GDB Level two which took 6 minutes.

Result of Level two, same as Level one.

    Level three took 45 minutes.

I am now scanning with level four for NTFS files only, and at the moment it has been running for 1 hour and it has not finished yet it has over two hours still to go. I will post the result when finished.

Practically you need not change the default settings, If you want under File System you can keep only NTFS and deselelect all other file systems. That will ease its job a little.
I have now run the scan on level four with only NTFS File System.
The scan took over five and a half hours!
The result as can be seen below is the same as for all other levels in that Users data is corrupted and unrecoverable as the HDD is too damaged with too many bad sectors. I didn't expect any other result.

My observations when running level four were that GDB showed duplicate partitions as screenshot below; this not only happened for this NTFS partition but also for all other NTFS partitions!

And reported drive as disk 2 when in fact it was disk 3!

Could this be a bug in GDB?

I wouldn't be able to say whether it is wrongly saying it is Disk 2 when you say it is Disk3 unless I see the first screen showing the connected disks.

Whatever, the picture shows that there is nothing to recover. . The result is the same. ALL system files including "Üser" files have been lost.

I presume that when the files were inaccessible your friend could have run checkdisk. You also ran checkdisk. If checkdisk is run when MFT is corrupted it will do an aggressive cleaning and delete all the files not indexed in MFT due to corruption ( Index corrupted due to bad sectors). That is why I always caution "Caution: You will run checkDisk only and if only TestDisk confirms that your MFT is OK and you will not interrupt Check Disk for any reason)"

My friend know nothing about computers other than surfing, emails, Word and the such but not technicalities, not even how to backup or create an image! It is a hard lesson that he has now learned!

We can now end this thread.

My most sincere thanks to @jumanji who has been most helpful and to @steve108.

    Thank you
