    @jumanji @steve108 @MaloK
    This is where I am now at.
    "Check the disk with Hard Disk Sentinel. It will give an immediate response on the health of the drive. Has it deteriorated further?" N0 same 31% Health and 24 bad sectors on the surface.
    Connected the drive to a SATA internally. Same result as connected with SATA to USB adaptor
    Started GDB and I am waiting for the pc to respond and see if GDB will scan for the drives.

    Thanks for the update. Hopefully direct SATA connection now will make faster progress, but we can only wait and see.

    @scopio,

    I've seen to may posts about storage going south, so I highly recommend using Crystal Disk Info (I run it in startup/resident mode - with icons in my system tray showing temperature and drive health[green, yellow, red, etc]) for each drive, because I don't want to have to remember to check drive health periodically and want early notification that there's a disk problem vs dealing with a surprise drive failure.

    Something to consider for your friend and yourself based on this experience ........ CrystalDiskInfo - Crystal Dew World [en] I use/recommend the standard portable version

    We have come to the end of the road with this issue.
    I think we have now come to the conclusion that the users data cannot be recovered!
    GDB did eventually work as it is meant to. Screenshots below;
    Suspected dead HDD-gdb-12.jpg

    Eventually it started find errors and after ignoring the first three I decided to ignore All.
    Suspected dead HDD-gdb-10.jpg

    When GDB displayed the tree the Users and Program Files are greyed out.
    Suspected dead HDD-gdb-13.jpg

    All greyed out folders do not contain anything, they are empty.
    Suspected dead HDD-gdb-16.jpg

    EFI and Recovery partitions have all entries in red.

    I think it is safe to say that this drive has had its day and no data will ever be recovered.

    This is a lesson to the owner and all those who do not backup there pcs'!

    I would like to express my thanks and appreciation to @jumanji @steve108 and @MaloK for their help and patience I have learned a lot from this exercise, thank you.

    I do use Crystal Disk Info along with other utilities.

    My friend knows nothing about pc maintenance he didn't even know what a backup or image is, which I will now inform him about and teach him how to use Macrium Reflect to backup the pc.

    We cant win them all...

    just for the record this is what GDB scan levels means...

    1 (*) Mount file system
    2 (**) Intelligent file system scan and recovery
    3 (***) Thorough file system scan and recovery
    4 (****) Complete drive scan, find any data trace

    At the moment GDB only attempted to mount the file system and has not scanned the drive.

    I feel this must be mentioned. In case some Users use this thread as a guide.

    You would need to run at level 2 or more to attempt data recovery.

    Thanks for elaborating the various levels.

    In any data recovery attempt, when different levels of scan can be run, if the first level scan does not bring expected results, one shoud try the next level and then the next and next till one exhausts the deepest scan.

    (In Partition Recovery with Partition Wizard also the same thing applies. If quick scan does not find the partitions, one should then do a full scan.If full scan also does not find the lost partitions, then data recovery)

    I am about to run GDB on level two. Then I will try leve3 and level 4. Just as an exercise, patience is needed because of the delay in the pc response time!
    Which settings should I set on the tools page?

    Practically you need not change the default settings, If you want under File System you can keep only NTFS and deselelect all other file systems. That will ease its job a little.

    When Getdataback is started it will automatically find the drives connected to the system. When you click on the specific drive it will scan and show you all the partitions. By default it will show * ( Level 1) ) You can choose the level by clicking on the level button and change it.

    Even though you have only one single F: drive GDB may show more than one partition. Generally one will select each partition to scan one by one. In your case since each scan will take more time you first run Partition Wizard and on the first screen, right click on F: > properties > Partition information ,find and note the start sector.

    In GetdataBack partitions shown, hover the mouse on the partitions rather filesystems shown and click on the one which shows the noted start sector.
