You've heard the term... new car smell?

Well sometimes electronic components (due to heat) have a new component smell.
As they "break in" this smell will eventually go away, completely.
Generally, the quality testing of electronic components should have gone past the "break in" point.

Also... for some electronics components that have this smell, it's a sign that something is wrong.
Burning electronics components will give off an ozone smell.

So... what @MaloK has said, is something to seriously consider. That smell is probably NOT a good sign.
But it's incredibly VAGUE and FAINT smell... it doesn't smell like electronics burning... hell i can only smell it IF i sniff like 2 CM away from top of the PC case otherwise i don't feel it. And it's not unpleasant like something is burning it's more like a weird chemical type smell.

Just give it some time. It may be just a new electronics smell.
Also, you don't have to smell electronics components that closely.
If it's going bad... you'll be able to easily smell it from further away.

Yes electronic component freshly manufactured will have a stronger smell than those that have rested on the shelves a while. but it's more like a fresh moulded plastic odour a bit like the smell of a fresh roll of electric tape.

Do they sell "New PC scent" in a can? Since I won't be buying a new one anytime soon, I could spray some and pretend

Smell seems perfectly normal for new electronics, as long as there's no smoke or burning odor.

So you're saying if something is being damaged i'd be able to sense more than 3 feet away from the PC case ?

I don't think that generalization could be made. It's more about the exact scent like @Bree mentioned.

Stop guys or Mikey's going to end with a smoke detector in his computer case. If something is not right it will amplify real quick.

Hmm, that's a brilliant idea for a new PC accessory. It could monitor for smoke/odor and provide an on screen notification/report: normal, burnt capacitor, etc .

Seriously, some of us have inquiring minds and want to learn through questions - nothing wrong with that.
