Blue question mark over drive icon

Win 10. I have a shortcut on the desktop for an external hard drive. It has a blue question mark over the shortcut icon. The drive works perfectly well. I can access it with not problems. What does the question mark mean and how can I get rid of it?

This could be a poor connection to the drive, possibly intermittent power feed through the USB cable or even a flakey connection in general (notorious with USB ports on some machines and some cables). Just a thought but maybe shut down, change cables and try again?

You might also try mapping the network drive to a different drive letter.

Is the drive an External USB connected to the computer or is it connected to the Router by USB cable? I use both ways, USB drives to the computer and NAS drive via Ethernet cable to the Router, only have to Map the Public folder on the NAS drive to gain access from any computer I do that on.

It's an external SSD, connected to a laptop with USD cable through a USD hub.

That is normal behavior for external drives. Windows will assign that icon if the external drive is not immediately accessible when Windows starts even though the drive becomes assessable shortly thereafter. Delete the shortcut and create a fresh one and it will have the normal icon.

I think garyb0125 is correct with the driver letter issue. Maybe windows is having trouble assigning one but if you can see it in disk management you can pick another just to test it out
