Shut Down according to MS is a combination of Sleep and Hibernation.

However, you can change that in Power Options.

Power Options > Additional power settings > Choose what the Power button does...

In there you should have Power button options for On battery and Plugged in.
    You should have options for:
    1. Do nothing
    2. Sleep
    3. Hibernate
    4. Shut down
    5. Turn off the display

    Save changes etc.

You can also show or not show options in the Start Power menu.

The option for Hibernate consumes least power as a hidden system file is written to the HDD. On mine it is about 7 GB.

Does your computer maker provide a service manual for your model?

If so I'd expect that to clear up any mystery [by either having or by not having a section on CMOS battery replacement].
    - They might refer to it as the "coin-cell" battery rather than the "CMOS" battery.

Sorry. I thought it was still in doubt but post #12 states that it does not have one. I'd missed that.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

You have to find out if the battery is loosing charge by it's own or if it's the computer that is discharging the battery.
    - fully charge existing battery and remove it. Next day install it back and see whether its still fully charged.

Denis, Unfortunately the Satellite S50B laptop doesn't have a CMOS battery. See post 12

I have fully charged the battery now.

And have now disconnected the battery completely.

Tomorrow afternoon/eve I'll replace the battery and see if there is still a full charge.

Would that be the right thing to do next?

When you reinstall the battery tomorrow afternoon don't connect the charger. Start the laptop, enter BIOS just to see how much charge it has and how fast it discharge.
