How to create a RAID 1 array on my Gigabyte motherboard

I have a custom built PC running Windows 10 on a Gigabyte AORUS GA-Z270X Gaming 7 1151 7th Gen DDR4 RGB Fusion motherboard.

The machine contains 3 hard drives; one for the OS and two used in a RAID 1 array for data storage.

It has worked flawlessly for 4 years, but to prepare it for a Windows 11 upgrade, I had to make some changes, which required modifications to the BIOS. Somehow, this has resulted in the RAID 1 array becoming broken, so I'm seeing them as two separate disks now. Here's my current disk configuration:

Disk 0 and 1 are the two disks I would like to be configured as RAID 1.

Can anyone explain how I can create this RAID 1 array?

Motherboard RAID array settings are almost always disabled by being reset to factory values by firmware updates. If you have a record of your previous RAID settings, you might be able to recover the array as it was, otherwise you'll have to go through the RAID configuration procedure documented in the manual for your motherboard.

Similar problems happen when you use Microsoft's software RAID settings and you update the operating system. Windows software RAID is not the same as motherboard RAID. Documentation on Storage Spaces is available at
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...ion=Windows_10

The only way to prevent these things from happening is to use a separate, dedicated RAID controller so that the array always looks like a single disk to both motherboard and Windows.

Thanks Selden, I've created a post on a Gigabyte forum as I suspect my issue is very specific to my motherboard and so probably won't get much help from a Windows forum.

You probably had created the RAID array on BIOS.
Disk mode must be set to RAID not AHCI.
If you haven't changed anything on the drives, when you boot you will have the array back.

Unfortunately, my PC won't boot into Windows unless SATA mode is set to AHCI as it doesn't recognise the NVME.

I remember (and have notes) from when I originally setup the PC and created the RAID, this is what I had to do. Unfortunately, this doesn't appear to work anymore, possibly due to all the other BIOS settings I've changed recently.

I inadvertently got RAID 1 as the BIOS entry shows AHCI/RAID and with 2 drives connected Win10 installed as RAID without more prompting, later removal of the second/D: drive broke the boot process.

As an owner of numerous Gigabyte boards, including the Gigabyte GA-Z270X-Gaming 8 board listed in my system specs under system two, I know these boards have instructions on how to setup RAID. Why are you not looking to Gigabyte?

You can go here and download the "RAID Setup Guide" - GA-Z270X-Gaming 7 (rev. 1.0) Support | Motherboard - GIGABYTE Global

Outside of that I can't help since I don't have RAID setup on my PC. That's done on my NAS running RAID 10.

    Anyway, what am I missing?

    sygnus21, you're not missing anything!

I have watched multiple videos and downloaded and followed the instructions in the RAID Setup Guide. They don't work. I do everything suggested without error, but on booting into Windows there's no RAID array.

I have logged a call with Gigabyte, but so far haven't received a reply.

    So, what am I missing?

Thanks, but I've watched the videos and read the Gigabyte RAID instructions, but nothing seems to work. I'm at a loss.

I'll be working with a client tomorrow that has RAID 1 on her computer which is the mirror or redundancy type of RAID, the second drive doesn't show. [The client's son sent it to her from his business.]
