    Toshiba Sattellite Battery

Now that the update issue, on this old Toshiba Satellite is hopefully sorted, I am turning my attention to the long dead battery......tried it with an identical battery, that I know to be 100% charged, but the machine still says "Battery Not Detected"......before buying a new battery, is there anything I can do rectify this problem ?

You could try opening Device manager, then under Batteries uninstall 'Microsoft AC Adapter' and 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery'. Then scan for hardware changes and let it reinstall them.

You say you have an identical battery that you know is charged. Does that mean you also have another laptop that takes the same battery? If so it would be interesting to see what it says about the 'long dead battery' if you try it in it.

O.k just done that, it says that both drivers are up to date........with the old battery in the other identical laptop, it gives the same message, "no battery detected".......

Don't know if it's significant, or not, but on the "good" laptop there are three lights on the front......White (charging) White and Red........on the "old" one the lights are Red (Flashing) White and Red.......both power chords are working o.k......

It does sound the the "old" one may have a fault in its internal charging circuitry. Don't know what your exact model is, but it's probably similar to my old Toshiba Satellite L750. I have 6 LEDs, indicating:

    1. DC IN: (white/amber) white=powered up, flashing amber=fault condition
    2. Power: (white/amber) white=turned on, pulsing amber=sleep mode
    3. Battery: (white/amber) white=charged, amber=charging, flashing amber=low battery warning.
    4. (white) HDD activity
    5. (white) SD card activity
    6. (amber) WiFi on

This is a Toshiba Satellite Pro C850-HE model.......the red charging light has now stopped flashing, and is a constant red......it makes me wonder if there is anything wrong with the battery at all, although it has been "dead" for some time.....if it can't be detected, then obviously it can't be charged......Mmmhhh.......EDIT .....cancel that, the charging light has started flashing again.......

Well have tried several things, to no avail, this machine still won't detect the battery, I may have to live with it working on just the power chord only, a bit annoying as I hate it when something that should work won't.......someone suggested updating the BIOS, but a bit wary about doing that........

I doubt the bios would have any effect, sounds more like the battery is dead.

You can get the manual for it here, your model is listed under Product type: 'Archive'.

I think you are right Bree......what I don't understand is why it won't recognise the good battery, which is identical, and 100% charged......

Your reply indicates that you did not do what Bree suggested [you merely checked the drivers for updates instead].
Your action would not accomplish what uninstalling-reinstalling the drivers would accomplish - resetting all driver components.
I suggest you use Bree's advice before you start considering hardware defects.

    Best of luck,

No, I uninstalled both drivers, then let it re-install them, as per Bree's instructions.....no change.....then did it again, with the good battery installed......again no change......

Well, I cannot find a solution to this problem, so may just have to live with it.......I only want to use the machine as back up, incase my other two machines develop problems.......I did consider taking the back off, and delving into the inner workings, although I doubt that it would something like a wire off or something........maybe a chip has failed, but how to tell ?.....Thanks to all who replied......
