Possibly a dumb memory question, but I looked around first, no joy

Older HP DV7 64bit i7 processor now on the Win10 download for 18 months or so, doubled RAM memory from 8 to 16. Runs better but I am wondering if there is an easy way to review Windows settings for various memory assignments or usage, and if so, are there any recommendations. I can definitely say that an upgrade on an old machine offers potential for improved performance. 16 was specified by the generally good service manual created for this machine as the max allowable.
    System:
    Device name: DV7
    Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3610QM CPU @ 2.30GHz 2.30 GHz
    Installed RAM 16.0 GB

Have you tried Task Manager? Open Task Manager in Windows 10 ctrl-shift-esc works nicely to open it.

    TM - Performance - Memory
    and
TM - Processes sort by Memory

Sorry, Guessing it's a really dumb question then: Can I tweak memory allocation settings or allow more RAM to be used in an effort to minimize hard drive activity, i.e. to maximize efficiency.

Thanks, I'll look at Task Mgr. Besides giving a view of memory activity, what can I do with that information? It's not much, but right away I see that Microsoft Story is hungry and I don't need it often.

Original HDD, a Toshiba. I know that an SSD would be another improvement, at a crossroads on that plus I don't really know how to do it successfully. And, the Crucial Black Friday has ended!!

Am not sure the HDD usage is unnecessarily high. If the system is really able to allocate RAM brilliantly, then I am OK. I was just
wondering if there is anything I should do to maximize the investment so to speak.

Manage Virtual Memory Pagefile in Windows 10 what are your settings for paging file? I would not them and test with Option 2, automatically managed on for all drives.

I'm guessing your boot drive is a HDD? In that case upgrading to a SSD by cloning the HDD will do wonders for high disk usage experience with a HDD.

Look at Task Manager and see what's causing the high disk usage too.

If you don't have something similar, download HD Sentinel and check your drive's health.

You can also run "chkdsk /scan c:" from admin powershell to check for disk problems.

OK, thanks for suggestions. Am using HWinfo64 and at present I am not thinking the HD is weak but it is getting old. Will
look at your suggestions, thank you.

Drives can start failing at any time. I recommend running CDI in resident/startup mode: CrystalDiskInfo - Software to check information on the health of your hard drive for early warning

The memory usage is a floating figure, not fixed,For example,a dedicated GPU has a certain amount of memory installed and if more is required, then RAM is used temporarily.
Not a good idea to publish full or partial ID numbers.A scammer's heaven.
