Calibrating HP laptop battery - nothing happens

This pertains to an HP Probook 450 G5, purchased new in July 2018.

Below is a current status report from the HP Power Manager:

That echoes what the HP Support assistant notes, that the battery needs calibration.

However, when I run the battery check from the support assistant I get this:

Calibrating HP laptop battery - nothing happens-image.png

And when I run the battery check linked to from the above, I just get something saying it was unable to calibrate the battery. And when I google this, I find sites that seem more like they're trying to sell me a new battery, than advise what to do.

I keep the computer plugged in all the time, and have battery management set to maximize the battery health (which for my computer means having it charged to 80%). When I do run it on battery, I get maybe three hours from it; I know there was a time it was 5-6 hours, maybe more.

Anything I should be doing? How important is battery calibration? What am I supposed to do when I can't calibrate using the steps below?

I experienced the similar situation with my 2 year old HP Spectre where the calibration procedure did not seem to change the status.

The battery battery check reports it is at 39 WHr compared to the design capacity oy 61 WHr, but running time is still reasonable. The plan is to replace the battery if/when the running time drops too low.

Yeah, as shown above, I'm at the 80% capacity, that the "maximize battery life" setting caps out at. I think when I brought the laptop on vacation, I let it charge to 100% so I could squeeze a bit more usage out of it while on battery, and it worked fine.

I just wish the battery calibration - including not working - were better-documented.

Usually battery calibration requires discharging the battery then charging it again. Do the instructions mention this?
recommend creating a specific power plan for this rather than editing a current plan.

Nothing found - The Windows Club recommend creating a specific power plan for this rather than editing a current plan.

The instructions do mention this, and earlier in the year, when I first started getting the calibration notices, I tried and tried and tried again discharging to various levels, sometime recharging up to certain levels, and nothing worked.

But my battery, while obviously not at "factory fresh peak," is still quite good, so I finally gave up. Actually, I'd settle for a way to turn off the visible reminder in Support Assistant.

I clean install my OS and reinstalled the HP support Assistant. When I open it the battery is shown as normal.

Is you visible reminder presented as a pop-up outside of the Support Assistant or on the main Dashboard?

Below is how it looks on my bottom right of my display. The battery is actually only charged to 80%, but the latest version of HP's bios chooses to show it as 100%. Thanks I guess HP?

Is this consistent with the main Dashboard in the Support Assistant for the Battery?

Usually you would leave the laptop on battery until it shuts down itself.
