    Keyboard problem or not (?)

    Win version 1809

    Hello all.

My keyboard (ASUS VivoBook) sometimes won't capitalize 'R' when I do SHIFT+R in SOME apps. For example, it works inside the browser right now, but when I try to Shift+r inside notepad or in Windows search bar etc it won't work. If it's a hardware malfunction, the Shift+R shouldn't work at all, right? (Btw when Capslock is activated it registers 'R' no problem). Can't figure out what's causing this.
    Any thoughts, please?

Hi, a comparison you could try if you don't have a separate keyboard to compare is to use the on-screen keyboard
    Keyboard problem or not (?)-1.jpg

    Simply search for
    on-screen keyboard

e.g. via the taskbar search box (or Win key + S).

If SHIFT r/R works consistently with that, it would appear to be a mechanical/keyboard issue.

Thanks. But the on-screen keyboard has that glitch too!

Ah, that actually confirms it's NOT your hardware.... which is progress of a sort..

Perhaps the key is reallocated in some circumstances.. a bit hard to imagine why that would be program-specific.

Try creating a new user for test purposes. Log in as that user.
    Does the same thing happen?

History: (Almost never given by posters)
    - when did this start happening?
    - what changed around that time?

If just recently, have you tried using an appropriate System Restore point?

    Thanks.

Yeah, it depends on the program, weird.

It happened as I suspect after I've installed an old video game (Sorry, I forgot to mention that). Maybe the old-timey code in that game messed up the Shift or R key.

I'll test Restoring as a final option, cuz I've installed some heavy s/w since (it's a fresh Windows install).

I'll login via a new user and update the situation.

    Thanks for the suggestions

Good you know that- you could try simply uninstalling that, unless there's some option somewhere..

As you know that, the new user test is really rather redundant.

What I do when clean installing is periodically, during the sequence of installing programs and configuring, to create a disk image - so if something goes wrong - and I notice it at the time- I can go back just a little. But it's more difficult if the problem only becomes apparent a long time after its cause.
