Oh good info. Pairing and unpairing. There certainly is a lot to this Bluetooth wireless stuff. I can get tech support quote unquote from Amazon for both devices. They are arriving Monday (earbuds) so I'll let you know how I do. Thanks to all again!!
Sure, come back any time. I'm bluetooth (bt) galore over here seeing I have 2 bt game controllers (DualShock4, XBOX Series), 1 bt speaker (JBL), and 1 bt earphones (SoundPEATS). They can also be paired/unpaired interchangeably to my sources which are my laptop, smartphone, and tablet. :)

Once you've succeeded once or twice, you'll think it's really straightforward.
And you'll always have TenForums & this thread to come back to.

    Good luck on Monday then,

I am going to purchase a cheap set of wireless earbuds ($15.99). I don't need anything high end as I only listen to audio books when I walk. Unfamiliar as I am with the wireless earbud world, these will work when I leave the house and walk half a mile away? Appreciate thoughts. Thanks so much.

Also will they pair with an mp3 player or do I listen to the book on my laptop thru these earbuds? See, I don't know much about this technology. Thanks.
My first wireless (bluetooth) earbuds were made by Phillips. Cost me about US $25. After about one year, the very soft and thin rubber "frame" just tore off. This frame had clips for the ears so the earbuds just fell out.

Then I bought a new pair for about US $45. So far, so good. These earbuds auto power off. My earlier ones did not.

"auto-power off? If you turn off your system (laptop with audio books) doesn't the Bluetooth turn off. Or do you have to manually turn off the earbuds? Thanks.

Yes, Bluetooth turns off with the computer.

Your earpods will have their own method of turning off. It might be automatic, it might not. You'll have to read its user manual.

On the bright side, once paired re-connection is likely to be automatic [but you'll still have to read its user manual].

The user manual is likely to be 8 pages or thereabouts.

Most bluetooth devices have their own power-off mechanisms which as mentioned by @Try3 is in the manual.

Generally, bluetooth peripherals (like earbuds, gamepads) turn off automatically when you turn off their source (like laptop, ebook readers) because the connection has been severed.

So you have multiple ways to do this. :)

Well here I am listening to my music on my Dell laptop ;using wireless earbuds. I am happy to have accomplished that BUT my main wish is to pair with my Kindle fire 10. Here's what happens - if I go to settings on the Kindle, "pair new device" comes up - then it shows available devices..a bunch of unknown stuff comes up but including the Dell. It shows the Tablet's bluetooth address as a 12 digit number. When I go to the Dell and say pair or add new device it says - could not pair with the Dell (do I want it paired with the dell?) because of an incorrect PIN or passkey. Is there somewhere that I can put in the 12 digit number? I think I'm almst there but obviously NOT QUITE!! Any help would be lovely. Thanks. Also, the kindle says Bluetooth not connected but the earbuds say they are. Oh dear. It's a muddle.

Unless the earbud manual specifically states that they can be paired with more than one device at a time I think you should unpair them from the Dell.
    - It was a useful test. It proves that the earbuds work.
    - Note the name shown by the Dell for the earbuds - they are going to be seen by the same name on everything else [like the Kindle].

When you are trying to pair the earbuds with the Kindle, I can only suggest [not knowing anything about Kindles] that you
    - Check that the Kindle's Bluetooth is off
    - Turn on the earbuds, switch on their pairing mode [if there is such a thing - they might automatically be in pairing mode when they are turned on]
    - Turn on the Kindle's Bluetooth and go to its pairing dialog where you should see the same earbuds name you saw on the Dell's Bluetooth.
