WD My Book external HD - Win10 .. files disappear & then reappear!

    Hi
I have just purchased a WD 3tb Mybook external HD & connected to my win10 PC
I have transferred around 500gb of my music files to drive - however every folder i open, all files immediately disappear, then one by one they re-appear. It’s very annoying especially if there are loads of files in folder
    Any ideas?

Could depend on your file explorer view - may be processing the metadata to populate fields.

Try a different non music-related view.

Are you sure the "files" disappear or the images of the files? Also, do you get a green bar scrolling at the top?

It could be a caching issue where Windows Explorer needs to reload the file info.

    Hi @aqol45,

Immediately try that WD My Book 3TB drive on another PC,. If you see the same behaviour return it.

    1. All Western Digital external drives - except the Elements model - are hardware encrypted by the electronics inside the enclosure - "On the fly" encryption while writing and "On the fly" decryption while reading.. Is something wrong with it? Reason why you should immediately try it out on another PC to rule it out.

    2. Since you are copying your music files and perhaps other video and stills, I assume that it is a backup. Self-encryptng drives is a bad choice for backup and for anything as a matter of fact.. If the electronics inside fails as happens usually, you may not be able to recover the data in the HDD even if the HDD inside is good. You will only recover the encrypted data which will be useless. Are you willing to take the risk?

If you are intent on a WD external drive, go buy an Elements model which is not encrypted.

Hi aqol45 Exactly what jumaji said? I had a new WD and lost the lot no reason, yet I had a WD for Years and no problems' thats why I bought another one and it lasted a few weeks, and WD were never home when I rang them No Help at all? I took it back and got a refund and bought a Toshiba Cheers Dasha
