How to load a diver that Microsoft rejects

Digitrax requires a special driver for com3. When i try to load it, Microsoft says their driver is the best. My model train wont run with the microsoft driver. I just installed windows 10 pro in an HP laptop.

Open Device manager (right click on Start, select it)

in the menu under Actions, select "add Legacy Hardware". Wizzard will open. follow instructions. Have driver file handy..

How to load a driver that microsoft rejects

THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP, BUT THERE MUST BE MORE. i REMOVED THE REQUIREMENT FOR DIGITAL SIGNATURE
(OPTION 7) AND THE PROCEEDED BY GOING TO ACTIONS AND ADDING A LEGACY AS SUGGESTED. THE DRIVER DID LOAD IN COM PORT 5 WHICH MUST BE AN INTERNAL PORT BECAUSE ALL THREE OF THE USB SLOTS WORK WITH THE MOUSE BUT NOT WITH DIGITRAX. WHEN I HILIGHT COM5 AND LOOK AT THE DRIVER IT SAYS DIGITRAX, LOCATION UNKNOWN AND THE STATES IN CANNOT RUN AND THAT IT IS NOT DIGITALLY SIGNED.

    ANY MORE SUGGESTIONS.

    THANKS,
    LARRY

    Please don't use all caps.

If you want to get someone's attention... either quote them or add an @ symbol in front of their account name.
Either will light up the GREEN notification button at the top of the page.

    Like so... @AndreTen

    @LARRYCR

I assume you have a PR3 / PR4 controller. Have you followed this guide for installation ?

Let me first apologize for using all caps. They are easier for me to read. Next week I have cataract surgery and maybe I will be able to see better.

Yes, I have followed the Digitrax procedure for installing the software and I get down to selecting the new driver, select next and the computer informs me that I already have the best drivers installed and it is not the one that I want.

    Ok,

The procedure is a little tricky there. especially from step 14 (17 to 20)

15 - The Device Manager will open. Right Click on the USB Serial Device that shows up under Ports (COM & LPT)

16 - Click on Update Driver Software

17 - Click on Browse my computer for driver software

18 - Do not Browse for software, instead Click the Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

    19 - Click Have Disk

    20 - Click on Computer.

21 - Browse to the location on your computer where you saved the drivers.

    22 - Click into the subdirectory win_xp_vista32_64.

23 - Select the “mchpcdc.inf” file. Click “Open”.

24 - Click the OK button.

25 - Click the Next button.

26 - Click on “Install this software anyway”

27 - A Window successfully updated your driver software should appear.

28 - Note the COM Port that windows assigned the PR3.

Larry, first I have to apologize, adding legacy device was not correct answer. Should read more carefully.

@MaloK posted the correct procedure (as per manufacturer).

Pay attention on Step 18 (by MaloK): Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my compute

Here you have to select the correct option, and Windows would let you install your driver
