Unallocated space on Windows 10 Retail USB drive

Why is there about 857 MB of unallocated space at the end of my official Microsoft retail 16GB Windows 10 USB flash drive. This space can't be used for anything else because the Microsoft USB drive is read-only and I can't create another partition in that space.

    Seriously?

What is point of trying to use less than 1GB of space?

Always keep in mind that any partitioning and formatting of drives, any type, takes some space that can't be otherwise accessed, my 16GB USB Thumb drives show 14.6GB available from the factory formatting as FAT32, same for Windows formatting of them.

For what I heard, a M$ retail USB drive is read only and can't be cleaned, formatted or written anything on it.
Try to save a text file to root of the main partition.

The drives I've seen from Microsoft had installable programs on them, similar to a CD or DVD, and were protected from being changed. Deleting the partition on one no longer needed worked to repartition it and format for other uses.

Not a bad price for a name-brand drive. Can even get them in 3-pack or 5-pack. Biggest issue is online ordering, sometimes the shipping cost is greater than the product cost.

It is because it was by far less expensive for MS to use a standard 16GB flash drive then it would be for them to have a custom flash drive manufactured with the exact capacity needed for their files. In addition, even if they did have a flash drive custom manufactured for the exact size needed for their files, it would probably still be a 16 GB flash drive anyway, with the controller firmware programmed to only recognize the custom size specified, because that would be the less expensive way for the flash drive supplier to do it.

These media use WORM Technology. And once these special drives are written. Using high power writing techniques, the bits are Physical and "Soldered" in place. And are Unalterable forever. But on the other hand will remain in perfect condition for ever too. In contrary to standard flash memory drive who will loose bits or completely wipe with time.
